Just wanted to announce that the Solidoodle 2 Aluminum platform is now available in the store. Much like the Solidoodle 3, we are inserting a limited stock of 20 units.

Why is the shipping so stupidly expensive?
$45 for the platform and another $42 for shipping. As per the other thread there are a lot of people who can't justify paying this.

I agree. That's crazy.
Aluminum bed MIGHT weigh 1 pound & in a flat rate box, USPS would charge $12.35.

The USPS calculator gives me around $20 for Europe (where I am).
Yeah, USPS flat rate international is much more reasonable compared to DHL/UPS/etc.
What's the advantage of the aluminium bed over the "original" one?
The old wood platform may tend to warp, shrink, or expand with the temperature and humidity in your printer. The aluminum platform will be more accurate. Some people have had the old platform crack or break. I am glad they upgraded the bed but probably won't replace mine immediately.
Yeah, it's more rigid & much more durable, although I didn't have problems with mine standing up to me prying prints off of it, it did flex a lot though, whereas the aluminum should be much more rigid & as Krist said, accurate.
I received my aluminum platform in the mail today and was hoping for some instructions on how to install it.
Looking at my printer, it looks like I will have take it all apart!
Could anyone give me a quick run down?
Im thinking;
- loosen hose clamps for the Z-axis shafts and slide them out?
- Undo 4nuts which hold the current wooden platform for z-axis control
- Cant slide platform up because X/Y shafts in the way?
- Cant slide platform down because z-axis stepper motor in the way.
Any pics/tips would be great.

Relatively high weight. We also do not use flat rate boxes.
