Topic: What to do with a Cupcake

Before I got my Solidoodle 2, I had a Makerbot Cupcake v.3, with no mods or upgrades, I used.  When the hot-end gave up the ghost on it, I decided it was time for a new printer anyway.  So now I have a Cupcake taking up space that will still move well on all the axes.
Anyone have any tips or suggestions for turning this little box into something useful again?

Send it to me, I'll put a hotend in it and add it to my botfarm smile

I KNEW IT!

But then again... you're still printing up a storm...
and you have the filastruder under your belt too.
Good combination.

At the very least put a stepper on the extruder.  Or see if anyone made a dremel attachment for a cupcake and do some light milling.

It's nothing impressive yet, just two SD2s and a SD3. I've made over 100 hoppers so far, though - and I've had to weave in other jobs like this one:

Heh, should have known one of the first suggestions would be a 'send it to me!'  I think I'd rather try to make it useful to me, though.  wink

I am curious about the light-duty milling machine option, though.  Maybe take some tips from the Solimill thread and try to mount a dremel wand to it and use it for milling foam or soft plastics and woods for models...  Hmmm...

There are a few on Thingiverse; thing:1897 and thing:19046 are a couple. I always meant to do one of these with my Cupcake but never did...

Don: Folger Tech 2020 Kossel Rev A + Borosilicate + Snow Effector
        Davinci 1.0 + Repetier : Filastruder
        SD3 + RAMPS + Lawsy Carriages + E3D + Borosilicate + ... : Cupcake

Re: What to do with a Cupcake

Now I'm wondering if I could turn it into a finishing station for small pieces.  Print out something, then put it in the Cupcake and let the dremel with sanding wheel  or small bit go to work smoothing and finishing.  It'd take some work getting it calibrated so that the piece was lined up properly, but it could be a fun challenge.

Interesting proposal on finishing.  I was just thinking about making one to use as an engraver/milling machine.  After a little research, the biggest problem seems to be getting enough torque from the motors to cut through wood/metal.  Using it with a dremel hand attachment and a sander would bypass that issue, but it might take a lot of g-coding and placing the piece in the exact same spot for it to work.  Let us know how it works!
