Topic: Ultra compact 12V 48A power supply $30 + $5 shipping
Hiya! I bought four IBM 585W server power supplies off of ebay for a project a long time ago. FRU-39Y7169.
Dimensions: roughly 12"x1.6"x3" . Even other server power supplies of a similar rating tend to have a density 35+% less than these. [so they're not as compact.] These used power supplies easily have $100-200 in parts and labor in their production, but they're dumped on the used market because server centers are constantly upgrading their equipment well before it's dead. With a bit of information online, heavy soldering, and time, they can be modded as powerful power supplies for your solidoodle, RC battery charger, or whatever else you want 12V for.
I ended up modding all of them to output a stable 12.5V. Basically this involves taking apart the case, desoldering a few pins, and soldering (with a high wattage iron) my wires on. It also involves another small wire that goes to enable the output.
I lost one of the power supplies (it was either dead from purchase, or by my modding) by trying to be fancy and get the power supply to output 14.5V (that particular modification doesn't seem to work with the ones I have- after the first I settled on 12.5V as the output.)
Long story short, I am selling two of these power supplies to raise money for the E3D-online.com hot end that I bought :-).
Specs:
12.5V, 48A
1 set of super flexible 14awg silicone covered wires 11" long to go to the Sanguinolo screw terminals
1 set of super flexible 10awg silicone covered wires about 20" long for whatever high power application you want
1 16" ribbon cable loop that is brought out in case you want to splice in a switch for a low-current on-off switch (this line if broken will turn off the output of the power supply, but it can be a low power cheap switch because the current doesn't go through it.)
I can add 4mm bullet connectors on the end or XT60 connectors, female or male, free upon request!
I can upload photos tomorrow! Mine tucks nicely to the side of the SD2
I am asking for $30 OBO each. If there is interest in this I'll also mod my HSP power supply that is a little less power dense, but equally ultra-powered.
