Topic: Artifacts and spheres

Hi Everyone,

I've been tinkering with my SD2 for about 2 weeks, calibrating and figuring stuff out. While I am happy to own a 3D printer and understand there is a learning curve, I'm a bit frustrated from the results I am getting.

I am looking for help regarding two issues I have encountered. First, is printing spheres. If you look at the attached image, you will notice that my sphere is not a sphere, the bottom part which requires support in order to print without disconnecting from the platform (Glass+Hairspray) is all jagged and more cone like in shape after removing the support material. Anyone have any insight to share on how to print a sphere? (this is for a ball joint for an Iphone car mount.)

Secondly, I am seeing these strange artifact on the sides of my prints, almost like a diagonal moire pattern. I have the new aluminum Z platform and installed a Well nut on the top to hug down the axis and eliminate the backlash, but am still getting some light banding and this funky diagonal pattern. Any idea on how to solve this? I see people displaying nicely printed smooth and uniform layering and would like to know how to achieve this as well.

Any help is highly appreciated.

Jonathan

Re: Artifacts and spheres

Looks like a bit of overextrusion which may be adding to the shrinkage problem on the bottom half of the sphere, I have only done a few spheres and since I wanted them smooth with no support I split them in half then glued them together afterwards.
