Topic: My first prints with the SD3

I recently got my SD3 and have been working with it and dialing it in.  I've managed to print a run of spare parts as well as some fun stuff.  I've recently made an enclosure for it (Thanks paeltz!) and it's working much better now.  I just wanted a chance to show some of them and possibly convince someone to get one!

If it's not obvious by the pictures, I'm really into gears because I'm an mechanical engineer.  I've always been interested in 3D printing, and I'm very excited to get one of my own!  I'm hoping to get back into an old hobby with this machine (making custom rubik's cubes), and I'm hoping to start making some new creations of my own soon now that my printer is calibrated and enclosed.  I can provide pictures of some of my older stuff if requested.  Thanks!

Very nice! smile Enclosure and glass seems to be the key to nice prints...

Re: My first prints with the SD3

I received some questions about my prints that I'd like to address below.

The dial indicator mount is courtesy of Ian Johnson and is on Thingiverse here.
My indicator is the same as most people's, which can be purchased on Amazon for $40.  Link
The mount also requires magnets that can be found here
(All links courtesy of Ian Johnson as well via the Thingiverse link)

I have yet to calibrate the roundness of my parts, and I'm fairly sure that if I did print a purely circular part that it would be slightly off.  Solidoodle released a video on how to calibrate this that I cannot seem to find at the moment.

Finally, the elliptical gears can be found on Thingiverse here.

Re: My first prints with the SD3

Thank you for the help finding that link.  I really need to do that for mine to get better prints.

Here's a new print from last night, and I believe that I have sorted out some of my problems.  It still seems like sparse infill results in issues with higher resolution prints.  This model turned out ok, but had some issues towards the front point on the boat.

It's going to be my first test subject in my new presto deep fryer part finisher.  I hope it still floats afterwards!

Re: My first prints with the SD3

Make sure you understand the process for presto and use proper ventilation or protection.

Re: My first prints with the SD3

I appreciate your concern, and I have done my best to read Ian and Jooshs' posts about proper handling of acetone and whatnot.  I will most likely attempt it on my driveway and it is windy enough today that I shouldn't be too exposed to fumes.

Re: My first prints with the SD3

Quick question:  What else can be used on the bottom of the basket instead of Kapton (as well as glass and metal)?

I could probably get a piece of glass cut to fit, but I am curious if any other kind of tape or other substance would hold up just as well if not better.

I kinda botched the bottom of my boat with the holes in the basket. sad It came out pretty good though!

Edit:  I ended up giving foil a shot and it seemed to work fine.  It stuck to the part a bit but as it dried it no longer stuck.

I seem to have encountered an issue similar to the one I posted in another thread.  The pictures will show the implications of sparse infill and higher (0.2 mm) resolution printing.

Re: My first prints with the SD3

I notice the micrometer... Is it needed to set the machine up? My printer is on order i am keen to get any parts i need to set it ordered and here for when it arrives!

Re: My first prints with the SD3

It is not required, although it does make leveling the bed more accurate. There are several methods that people are using for leveling the beds. You can also use a piece of paper to check for bed level and height adjustment. Search the forum or review the wiki's for the different setup methods. In order to use the dial indicator, you will need to print the mount of your choosing. (Either the one for the stock jigsaw or the one that fits the mk4) therefore you will probably want to use the paper method first. Before you start printing I would recommend homing your printer then manually moving your print head around the entire bed to make sure it doesn't strike the bed before your first print job. That way you won't have a head crash that could mess up your first print or rip your kapton.

Re: My first prints with the SD3

My parents got me some new colors as a gift, so I thought I would try out the treefrog for my wife.  It's about 1.6 scale of the original at 0.1 mm resolution.  It came out awesome!

Re: My first prints with the SD3

These are turning out great, have you had any issue with curling since you built the enclosure and started using glass?

I've had far fewer issues with curling because of these two things.  I would highly recommend them.  The only other thing to look out for is how your first layer is laid down (z spot height), but I've noticed that I can get away with less squishing of the first layer than I used to.

(Oh and for the SD3, you can get 8" mirror plates at Walmart for about $4 or so in the candle section.  Unfortunately they are beveled at the edges, but I am looking to get some actual 8" pieces of glass soon.)

The frog is made of ABS.  See here

Re: My first prints with the SD3

I noticed that if you look at 1/4" magnets on Amazon, it will recommend that dial indicator as something else you might want to buy with them.

Those 1/4" round magnets are awesome. I have used them in quite a few printed projects now. I have another 40 on the way. I would recommend that anyone that has a 3D printer get a set of those magnets and a set of misc springs.

SD3 w/ mods:
Glass bed with QU-BD heat pad upgrade, threadless ballscrew w/ 8mm smooth rod, spectra line belt replacement, lawsy MK5 extruder, Lawsy replacement carriage, E3D hotend, Ramps 1.4 w/ reprap discount controller, DRV8825 drivers, 12v 30A PS, Acrylic case, Overkill Y-idlers, Filament alarm, Extruder fan + more.

Re: My first prints with the SD3

My first ABS print didn't stick.. nor the three after, all slipped at some point in the print. Going exclusive PLA. This did wonderfully on one part the whole time [img XX50]. Another [img XX51] did not do so well and ended up taking a dump off of a bridge onto my windshield in the end and was the reason it peeled. Took hours just to get this far, some help would be much appreciated. Let's not start with how successful I am with black...

Re: My first prints with the SD3

Boz,

I have a question about the gear bearing. Does it turn well. I try to print this one and the gear get stick together. I will put a photo.

thingiverse n°53451

I have :
- solidoodle 2
- ABS 1.75mm
- repetier v0.85b

What parameters could I change in order to avoid sticking

Thanks

Raph,

This bearing works pretty well.  It took breaking in with a drill as well as some CRC silicone lubricant to loosen it up, but it only barely stuck together when I first took it off the printer.  I have since printed one at 2x scale and it works much better and is incredibly smooth.  I would recommend, however, to go into the customizer on thingiverse and change the tolerance on the gear bearing to something higher.  I'm not sure what number will work exactly unfortunately, but this is the parameter that you can change in order to keep the gears from sticking together after the print is finished.

Alternatively, you might also want to calibrate your extrusion multiplier to make sure that you aren't overextruding.  This could also cause the gears to stick together.  Finally, you might also want to make sure that your first layer is extruding just enough to stick but not so much that it squishes too much and blobs out.  Let me know if you have any other questions.
