Re: Best filament prices

I ordered this same ABS. I haven't tried it yet since my printer just got here. smile

I haven't had time to try much printing with it yet through. Just a small part. Don't expect it to be crystal clear though and because it is clear, it takes a while for your hot end to clear previous color. I printed before mine was completely flushed out and ended up with some color from a previous run mixed in.

I've got 8 rolls I picked up from the poorly named repraper.com.  You can also find them under Reprap Wallmart.  My ISP filters their DNS, I assume because the url contains "rape" but I use Google DNS and can get there.

Others have reported contaminants in their repraper filament but I've had zero problems so far and am probably about half way through four of my eight rolls.

Cost about $25 Canadian per roll shipped.

how do you do that ? i try to buy one roll (19 $ .. very good) ..but the only choice for the shipping is FEDEX (they add their own 'tax' for international shipping..so, it's no/no) for 27.84$ (quebec/canada)...so it's a 46.84$/roll

even for 8 roll, the cost+shipping give a 29.5$ per roll... and i don't know the 'hidden' tax of Fedex..

Re: Best filament prices

So far I've only bought two rolls, but I've had good luck with the $31 Octave through Amazon and will continue to buy.

Octave seems to be putting out a good product at a reasonable price. I have a few rolls from them.

Interesting math:
After shipping I figured out I was paying 3.5¢ per cm³ in filament from them. Not too bad! For reference a standard Yoda bust at 20% infill comes out to 32.8 cm³ which costs ~$1.15 in plastic.

Makes you wonder how shapeways gets away with what they charge!

SD3 w/ mods:
Glass bed with QU-BD heat pad upgrade, threadless ballscrew w/ 8mm smooth rod, spectra line belt replacement, lawsy MK5 extruder, Lawsy replacement carriage, E3D hotend, Ramps 1.4 w/ reprap discount controller, DRV8825 drivers, 12v 30A PS, Acrylic case, Overkill Y-idlers, Filament alarm, Extruder fan + more.

Well, I've never tried to buy the fusable powder I believe they use. Plus, you're doing all the technical work yourself while shapeways is a complete consumer product. Essentially the price difference is what you're being 'paid' for your expertise.

Not to mention the quality/resolution I have seen in the shapeways finished products is a *tiny* bit better than the SD's in my opinion smile ... but then again you get what you pay for.

Re: Best filament prices

From what I've been able to find, the Nylon powder they use is >$70/kg and that is their cheapest material after ceramic.  Also SLS printing involves a lot of labor in cleaning and sorting the prints when they are done.

Re: Best filament prices

In Canada: seacans.com $24.99 per kilo

Re: Best filament prices

I've always had amazing luck with Protoparadigm.  They aren't the cheapest out there at $38.50 per 2 pounds (not a kilo), but they have a summer discount of 13% on all 2lb rolls and a student discount of 10% too.  I believe the few bucks extra spent is well worth the time saved dealing with a filament jam, especially considering how long a single roll will last.

One more interesting note: The starter roll of abs in my Solidoodle creates much more of a smell than the protoparadigm rolls.  Not necesarily good or bad, but just an observation.

Re: Best filament prices

For Europeans, iMakr (Solidoodle reseller in UK) sells Formfutura at 26 pounds per kg, shipping costs 15 pounds flat. That works out at 91 pounds for three spools shipped, or 36 euro per spool.
I have one spool and I like it, it works as it should, but I don't have any comparision point as this is my very first spool smile

I also found iGo3D.com which is a German firm, they told me their filament is coming from China, hopefully they did some QA when choosing their supplier.
They have 6 1kg spools for the price of 5 at 120 euros, and shipping is free in Europe for purchase of more than 100 Euros. This would work out at 20 euro per spool, which is very cheap, but their track is unproven, couldn't find any reviews.

Re: Best filament prices

Well, I put in an order to Seacans for their 2kg 8 colour pack to see how good the stuff is. Fingers crossed!

Shipping is relatively cheap too since they just use Canada Post. If it works out well I'll be ordering from them quite a bit I think.

Re: Best filament prices

I don't like octave. Got one bad roll from them and got turned off pretty bad because of the work it took to realize that.

I've purchased from zen toolworks alot, about $34/kg with amazon prime free shipping.

I've purchased 10lbs of high quality 1.75mm filament from Acme Plastics, for $10/lb including shipping, but they have a 10lb minimum and it took over a month because they were out of stock or something. That's quite a bit

38

Re: Best filament prices

For me Canada would be too expensive big_smile

But I'd like the idea of the multiple color pack, here in Europe only Faberdashery does that but they only produce PLA. I'm trying to master ABS first....

Re: Best filament prices

http://www.soliforum.com/topic/445/for- … h-quality/

these guys managed to send three spools for $90 including shipping.

that's $30 (USD) / £19 per kilo delivered.

I've not found a cheaper supplier.
still slowly melting through those three kilos, but would use them again happily.

(if you look at hackaday there is an article published recently about cost of filament.)

Re: Best filament prices

I still hate the fact Filament is around $30/kg.. abs doesn't cost that much... :-(
i hope filament doesn't turn into another ink jet.

Re: Best filament prices

I bought a 2kg roll of Zentoolworks to calibrate my SD3. I have had very consistent results. Good stuff.

$16 / kg

It is manufactured by them using their own filament extruder. I haven't tried it but for 16 bucks, I might pick up a couple kilos.

I just put an order in with Makibox. They are in Hong Kong so my average price was $22/kg shipped. I says 4-6 week lead time plus there is shipping. I will let you know around August.

This is a large order that I placed a while back. I forgot all about it until recently but I looks like they are delayed a bit.

6kg of filament should last me until I get my filastruder from Tim and have it up and running well. I just don't think it will get here before the filastruder does. tongue I wish I could remember what color filament I purchased.

You'll have the Filastruder in hand by the end of next week.

Re: Best filament prices

I've got a total of 6 kilos of filiement now.

Tried Amazon for cheaper prices (about $33/kilos but they appear to subcontract out).  Each of the 2 kilos came from a different place and one order was a bit disappointing.  The other was good.

I'm happiest with makergeeks.com at $35.95 after shipping. Consistent good quality for the PLA I"m using and very fast shipping.  I'm hoping they lower their price a couple $$ so I can keep using them.  Here's my current bin of material:

Did you get the blue red and yellow from Australia, or did you find a US reseller?

Re: Best filament prices

Just received my plain ABS from Octave,  with standard shipping with UPS, it arrived in exactly 5 business days, and the cost (including shipping) was  43.77 for 1kg(2.20lbs) Have not gotten the printer yet, so i do not know the quality

47

Re: Best filament prices

Just recieved my order from Seacans, the bags inside were open to air and no silica/dessicant was around. I'm probably going to have to dry these out in an oven, but I won't be able to get to this for a few days.

48

Re: Best filament prices

lemme know how your red goes.. mine ended up with sections at 1.85mm+.. making entry into my extruder impossible (took me a minute to work out why it had stopped and I couldn't manually feed it ! smile )

Besides the red though - the other colors all worked well.. despite my shipment also being weather exposed... (but I did have silica bags inside..

Re: Best filament prices

I've did some searching on alibaba.com it seems like you can buy it for $10 a KG plus some shipping

Re: Best filament prices

The Seacans stuff prints alright actually, ordering more now!

Update: so I emailed Seacans about their rainbow pack being exposed to air, their response was fast. They repack the spools themselves, but haven't gotten a vacuum sealer yet; I suggested sealing using liberal tape, we'll see if they respond. The 1kg spools on their own are sealed from the start, so they should have good shelf life.
