Where from ?
I have tried to download some from thingiverse and from this forum. It has to be something in windows 7 because I do not have any problems with my wife's windows 8 machine
Its not 'something with windows7' as much as 'something with that PC'... I download STL's on Win7 all the time.
Check what the file handlers are setup for .stl as - theres no certificate involved in STL download, so I would suggest that you have a Browser or OS file association for .STL.
Try using a different browser, which often will ensure you have a clean list of handlers...
You could always just Save As (right-click on them) instead of opening them. On my system STL is also associated with certificates, but I never double-click them to open them, I just go into Repetier and open them there. That's about all you can do if the same extension is used for wholly different things, as in this case.
(By the way, it is a Microsoft thing, it's the Crypto Shell Extensions, it's just not installed on every version and every copy of Windows.)
You have no specific file association for STLs, so Windows thinks they are 'Certificate Trust Lists'.
It just means you can't double click on them to open them in whatever program.
They should work 100% if you File > Open or equivalent in Repetier-Host/Slic3r/etc.
