Topic: Extruder "drags" across what's already printed

Folks,

Got my SD3 yesterday, got it running today. Had to adjust the bed to the right distance from the extruder.

But I'm slightly concerned about how the extruder drags itself over what's already printed, scratching a path on it.

Look at the image below. There's a light grey path going from SW to NE. That's the scratch I'm talking about.

Is the bed too high and needs to be lowered a smidgen (I think that's the technical term for it)? Or is it something else?

Need to calibrate your extrusion rate and filament flow settings.

You will always get a little ''dragging'' it's just the nature of how FFF works

I have the same thing. I adjusted the Z height to give a little more space and that helped. I guess Ill need to check this now too. Thanks

You can enable z-lift in slic3r.

I was having the same problem and I added to my z lift. Now, no more dragging.

Definitely check out the z-lift.

I'm having the same issue and I'm also looking at changing another parameter:

Check out the third picture on this page:
http://wiki.solidoodle.com/flow-rate

You can see where he has the first layer at 100% in the slic3r:print settings:advanced tab.

I believe I read somewhere the default is 200% which may also explain why there is a bit too much material on the first layer.  You probably want a little extra for good adhesion but 200% may be too much.  Also, when printing the first layer, it's clear as day that the nozzle is (for me) putting down too much material and dragging through the previous line causing it to bunch up on one side, which, in turn, makes the ridges that the nozzle drags across when moving to start the next layer.

In short, I'm having the same problem as you and this is going to be my troubleshooting process tonight.  I'll report on what happens.

The z-lift helped, changing the first layer % hasn't.  Looks like I need to fiddle with the z-stop a little more.

Re: Extruder "drags" across what's already printed

Be aware that using z-lift without addressing backlash will cause you much pain in the layer height department.. as every time it z-lifts the next layer wont be at the correct height....

http://www.soliforum.com/topic/2342/bac … the-topic/

So to avoid weird layer issues later, make sure you've got backlash measured and tuned out as much as possible.

On other printers that have a fixed table and move the extruder head in the z-axis, backlash is usually a much smaller issue... which is also why it is called 'lift' since its perspective is normally to 'lift' the extruder head, not 'lower the table' as per the solidoodles case...
