Topic: Trying to get things set up for the arrival of my SD3

Ok, my printer was shipped a couple of days ago.  So I figured I needed to get everything set up for it.  I wasn't sure what software I needed so I downloaded RepetierHost, as well as the python and all in one set up programs.  I installed them all.  Everything seems to be working so far on my main computer.  I began slicing a bunch of things that I intend to print once I have calibrated everything.

While I have sliced several files successfully, I ran into a couple stl files that will not slice using slicer3: the winter makerbot man http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:33984 and the canopic jar set http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:44526.

I also tried using skienforge for the canopic jars but, even though it finished without aborting, it did not slice it right at all.  Set at .03mm it only gave me 3 layers.

Can anyone help me out with those.  Is there something wrong with the files or is it on my end.  I have not messed with any settings in repetierhost other than to set it for the SD3 bed size.

Also, I planned on using and old laptop with Win XP on it as a dedicated computer for printing on my SD3 while using my main, and beefier computer to do the slicing.  I installed all of the setups that I mentioned above.  Yet repeteirhost will not start.  I click on it to open it up and it crashes and asks if I want to send a report to Microsoft.  I would like to get repetierhost working but I have no clue where to start.  Pronterface seems to work fine, but if I understand right we cannot use it with the SD3.  Or can we?

Any help would be appreciated on these items.

Thanks.

I have started using KISSLICER for all my slicing
and have had good luck.

Ultimaker S3.

Have you tried more than one version of RH?

No, I haven't.  The thought didn't occur to me.  I just used what was linked on the Solidoodle site.  I will try to find an earlier version.

Maybe load Linux mint on the laptop it can dual boot if you want and doesn't require much power

Re: Trying to get things set up for the arrival of my SD3

I had an old XP laptop that I used at first, but had problems with RH. The G-code preview wouldn't work and I had problems slicing. I bought a new cheap laptop and installed the same software, everything is now working fine. Maybe I could have gotten the old LT working, but after trashing a couple of prints half way through I decided a newer machine was in order. I've had problems slicing a few things with the RH package, Kisslicer seems to be able to slice them without a problem. I think their might have been a problem with the original .stl file on a couple of the parts. Try running them through Netfab first and then  slice them. I found out just because they're posted on Thingiverse doesn't mean the files are ready to print. The center of the gear heart has a problem that RH doesn't like. I used the center from the gear cube witch is the same part, RH didn't have a problem with that one. Go figure.
One thing I'd definitely suggest, a 6" or 8" piece of glass, a couple small binder clips, and a large can of unscented Aquanet. Easiest mod to make and it makes a huge difference in the parts sticking.

Thanks, Tim.  Definately going to use a glass bed.  I'll try the hairspray too.  I'll send those files to netfab and try then out,

I just tried the latest version of RH on my laptop, to no avail.  Same thing.  RH won't open and I get a request to send the log to Microsoft.

So will Pronterface not work with the SD3.  All I need to do is load the G code and hit print since I'm slicing everything on another computer.

After installing another version, which still didn't work, I started thing about system requirments.  I had already looked at it on the site before installing the second version but I figured that my laptop fulliled the requirements.  The RH requires .net 3.5 and SP1.  Well, since my laptop had SP2 on it I incorrectly figured that the .net framework was good too.

After updating my .net I was able to install and run RH.

Now I am working on getting those files to slice.  I used netfabb on the jars and I'm slicing now.  We will see.
