Topic: Is there an easy way to make the solidoodle do 3D Scanning?

I replaced the jigsaw extruder on my solidoodle tonight with the mk4 design Lawsy posted.  While reading through the various modifications that were considered, I thought to myself:

"Hmm, why can't we we mount a laser and a optical sensor on the extruder, to turn it 3D scanner?"  This would make repair jobs a lot easier (for instance, printing our own smart phone cases).

we have x/y/z axis's, and with the addition of a rotation component to change orientation of the laser+scanner (so that it is facing towards the build platform), we should be able to scan geometry to get 3D data out of it.

An even simpler way to do this is via this software using a  webcam:  http://www.123dapp.com/catch  This software doesn't seem to provide quantifiable size measurements though.  Perhaps we could use the bed as a calabration data point.

Any ideas?

not sure about the 'easy' bit.
how about a pin on a microswitch mounted next to the extruder.

Might be "easier" to just wait for this bad boy.

Just use a Kinect and ReconstructMe

Have you tried it ?
I have and easy it is not.
If the object you want fits nicely inside a 1 meter box and is large enough then its do-able.
I must try it on a face .. need two people, hard to get the missus enthused enough to have the patience to either hold the kinect or to model.

oh, can't be reflective either.
