Topic: The big Yoda

I know the Yoda print is played out but I couldn't help myself.  I saw a post a while back asking where all the SD3 Yoda's were so here it is.  I had a hard time slicing this (maybe because I'm running on a VM) and this was an accidental print at .1mm, 0 infill, at 210%.  I was just using these settings to see if it would slice and didn't realize the box start job when finished as checked.  I came back to my printer a few hours later and saw it had started so I let it finish.  It took a little over 18 hours and he was rotated while printing as his ears extend beyond the 8" bed.

How many perimeters?  That's really good for .1mm and hollow, I would have expected some gaps.  Can you post some closeups?  It's encouraging to see a print like this after all the posts on banding, etc.  Did you have to trim anything under the chin?  There are usually some dropped loops there since it is a 90 degree overhang.

I used 4 shells, I will post some other angles later today when I have a chance.  I had to trim off a few hairs off the chin and had a few minor ear issues on the bottom side. I saw someone print another one with a .5 nozzle .1mm layers that came out better. Having a larger nozzle in theory should help printing at higher degree angles.  I have a .5 I'm going to try once I get my new hot end from SD.

very impressive! Was this done in slic3r? Do you u print on the kapton or glass?

You should take some pictures with a dime or quarter in the picture.  Send it to SD they may throw it up on their page or FB or something.  I'm not a yoda fan because I think it's soooo played out but this was nice to see.

I'd like to see a picture of a tape measure from ear to ear. This dude looks huge, I wonder if he would even fit in the Presto steamer.

I am currently only using slic3r.  I print on glass with hairspray only because I have several different glass squares and switch them out quickly to move on to my next print.  Initially I had all kinds of sticking problems and tried switching to PLA, using brim, raft etc. Once I calibrated my extruder and bed height I do not use brim or rafts as everything sticks like crazy with PLA and ABS.  Sometimes the hairspary sticks to your prints and leaves a glossy area.  That's fine if it's on the bottom of something but not I just clean the Kapton with acetone and print away.

Upon further review I think I would offer to sell this thing to Solidoodle.  You can barely see your lines.  If they put this on their website or put it on the table at trade shows it would sell a helluva lot of printers.  They could just print it themselves but I think this is one of the best quality .1mm prints I've seen, and with NO FAN!!.  This is a marketing goldmine!

Thanks cmetzel, I think it's good as well.  He measures 9 1/4" from ear to ear.  As you can see from the top picture I wish I had selected a different top layer choice instead of rectilinear.  After I cut the whiskers from his chin I used a little ABS glue to fill in a few very small holes there and on his back left ear.  Here are more pictures.  @nickythegreek I love the matte finish my .1mm prints get so I'm not sure I would put it in the steamer.

BADASS  MENG!  I'm just gonna take a guess, but I think that's a new record for duration print on a SD printer...gratz!!!

We really need a duration print challenge sometime soon!!! I 100% agree SD should acquire this from you or do the same type of large print for advertising...that would be smart and sell printers.

I had no idea I'd get this many comments on this thread. 

I think it's defiantly possible in PLA.  I will probably try it again once Solidoodle sends me another hot end.  I think I'm going to print it with a .5 nozzle this time as I believe that should help with sharper overhangs.  I'll be sure to post the pictures.
