Topic: Print yourself a guitar!

I just bumped into this.  Interesting.  I wonder what kind of build area they have in order to print a guitar body.  Seems way over the top.

I think I "get" it.  They have created some 3D models that they then get printed commercially (perhaps ShapeWays).  At a price of $3,000 or so, they can afford to spend $1,000 or so just on the body print.  Still, interesting.

I saw an article about him. he has the guitar bodies printed via SLS which is laser sintering. He has them done in Nylon, and then I assume does a custom paint job on them. There are lots of commercial rapid prototyping houses out there that can do this kind of work. We send out for FDM and SLA's all the time for design verification and engineering prototypes.

We've seen these kinds of guitars before. It's a very cool demo of the technology, though I don't see myself buying one any time soon.

I have seen a similar project where they printed a violin - there was even a video of a violinist playing it and it sounded pretty cool

Plastic Violin? O_o I'm not sure I want to hear the tone of it.

I'm sure it would have been an electric violin smile

With 3d printing you could maybe create a design which enhances the vibrations even more than wood would allow you to do. Don't you think?

Super cool idea and major props for doing it, but I will stick with my fender!

There's so much 'woo' in the guitar would about the vibrational properties of different woods etc etc
No one has ever done a proper scientific study on said properties so it's all a little silly... I mean sure it'd be easier to do the study when using plastic but I really do think that with electric guitars one need'nt worry about what materials are used so long as they are strong.
