Topic: Atlas3D/FreeLSS Project Fork - Any Revival Interest?

As I can tell, murobo.com is now offline, and as time goes on the community following is losing support and dissolving (seems hope is lost!)

While I was not part of the original backers/developers/anything -- I am here now, and so far I have managed to make decent success in getting a from scratch build working. By this I mean:

  • A Controller PCB was created, loosely based off the bb.png that is floating around, and has since been revised several times.

  • All the Atlas3d hardware interconnections are online (lasers toggle, camera works, motor turns), using the 2015-05 image

  • I also have a newer image obtained from a generous source. Please note, while I would appreciate a copy of 1.27 for testing, I do not have nor will I share any software I am not supposed to, without expressed written permission from its author or IP holder!

  • I have ported the 2015-05 image to be able to run on an array of RPi units, including RPi 1, 2(v1.2), 3

  • Revised the DIY PCB: Eliminated Secondary Power Source (5v). All is now run off a single 12v Supply (Want pics?)

  • Resolved issues with lasers not toggling and motors not spinning due to hardware/software mismatch

Next Steps:

  • Try to contact Uriah to obtain his blessing/potential support moving forward

  • Finish building my scanner chassis

  • Update FreeLSS to 1.22 & calibrate

  • Establish a Git fork from FreeLSS

  • Make a .IMG and upload

Please note:

I have a family, job, life, many other obligations. I will do my best to be active, or at least provide a heartbeat when the going is slow. All I ask is for your constructive feedback, respect and understanding as I do my best keep this project alive!

The question is -- IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE?

So far, this has been a fun project, but its a lot of extra work to document and make it supported beyond what I personally need. I am happy to do/help, but only if there is a community and if people are wanting to learn/make this happen.

Wish List:

  • FreeLSS > 1.22

  • IMG files from 2016 or newer

  • Your participation / Atlas3d Builds

  • Software/information you might feel is useful

Update #1

***Atlas3D is built!***

I calibrated it and am doing my first scan right now. Looks like I need to do some troubleshooting according to what I am seeing in realtime previews. Will update FreeLSS first to see if that helps! (Pic attached the item scanning is the camera calibration item , with the 3 peaks. )

***Email Sent to Uriah***

Will see if he responds. His last post here was 4 years ago, and there are quite a few reports of him being MIA. Lets hope they are wrong!

Re: Atlas3D/FreeLSS Project Fork - Any Revival Interest?

Ok so, took a few days to work on other projects and family etc BUT:

--FreeLSS Updated to 1.22
--Calibrated Lasers
--Moved a LCD monitor, which was reflecting the laser back to the camera and creating bad scans
--Read a variety of posts from the Atlas3d & FreeLSS Soliforum page
--Completed a scan (attached) showing that while the update helped, clearly I have something wrong with my setup/calibration that needs to be adjusted. Will continue to read posts unless someone wants to chime in to speed things along! http://soliforum.com/i/?mfY8trx.jpeg

The object I scanned was a 12VDC Stepper Motor, no wires attached.

Anyone familiar with the error below?
back projection ray is going in the wrong direction

Re: Atlas3D/FreeLSS Project Fork - Any Revival Interest?

Is the "back projection" error you listed being seen in the logs?  I haven't seen anything like that.  Sounds like an issue related to calculating a 3D position from the pixel X/Y that I've seen listed for OpenCV.

One thing I found when I tried doing auto-calibration is that the background needed to be light coloured; I had a black background and it failed every time.  Switching to a white background worked.

One of the original backers here.

Glad to see someone has stepped forward to take over the project. Unfortunately, I only ever managed to get version 1.19 running on my kit, by the time I realized it had new updates, Uriah had stopped hosting new versions and responding here on the forums.

I do have the original 3d models from the kickstarter for 3d printing.

Sorry for the late reply, and thank you for chiming in! I was beginning to think this project wasn't worth trying to salvage lol

As for my delay in posting here:

There was just lots going on in my personal/professional lives and I haven't had absolutely any time to work on this recently.

HOWEVER

A kind person has generously donated a copy of FreeLSS-latest! I have not imaged it/tested it, but I look forward to doing that in the coming weeks.

Regarding Uriah, I have made several attempts and exhausted what I feel to be all means of communication available to me. While I will pursue any contact/leads I may receive, I believe its safe to consider this project officially abandoned,  and barring a direct response from Uriah forbidding it, I intend to fork the git and make as much code as I can available to GPL to hopefully recreate some community progress. No part of this project will involve money, unless somehow a community forms and can crowdfund any financial needs

C'mon folks... 1200 views and not many replies. You are clearly watching, chime in and show some support, ask questions, share your resources, etc!

Great point, The background was an LCD screen, so flat black. Will try a white/silver backdrop once I get the new software loaded!

Thanks for sharing your experience! big_smile

Re: Atlas3D/FreeLSS Project Fork - Any Revival Interest?

Hi superk,

glad to see that there is another optimist trying to get this old Setup running and is facing the same problems as I am. Funny I only found this Community now and Not weeks ago when I started to busy myself with this project.

Thanks to various posts and a list of parts, I managed to assemble a scanner and get it running...kind of. My scanning results are even worse than yours. When I found this topic, I was about to Look around for any tips of what to do. Right now, I'm not even sure if things will work out at all or I better disassemble everything.

I'm running FreeLSS 1.22 (from Uriahs GitHub) on a Pi 2B with a 2021 (?) Raspbian 'buster' image, where I installed the necessary packages and compiled FreeLSS. Wasn't that easy to get the 10-year-old setup to Run :-)
I put most of the electronics onto a breadboard, because I didnt want to solder everything as long as I cant be sure if IT will work.
I then calibrated the Scanner according to the original pages and Videos I could find utilizing the triangle-shaped calibration Item with the three tips. Since I read that the Background 'scene' is of importance while calibrating: it was on my workbench with stuff lying around and a wall-mounted light facing towards the camera. Maybe I should repeat the process as a first step in a better environment.

Concerning my scan results: If I scan the triangular calibration Item, the results looks like a cylinder. As If the Scanner only accepted/realized the points in a fixed distance from the camera/lasers.

Right now, I have no clue what would be best to try. There are so many variables in both hard- and Software, so many controls and screws to fiddle with. I am willing to give it a try (or two), If someone could point to the right direction :-)

If it won't work, it seems photogrammetry has made quite some progress in the past couple of years and newer smartphones even receive lidar-scanners built-in. But I'd still prefer the Atlas, since it is something I made by myself and...well...it has lasers! :-D

So, maybe we somehow get this running.

Greetings from Germany

Sam

P.S.: Please ignore all those upper case mistakes, my tablet is convinced to use German spelling 'improvements' on English words :-/

Re: Atlas3D/FreeLSS Project Fork - Any Revival Interest?

My Atlas 3D has been floating from shelf to shelf to shelf since I first got it from the Kickstarter. I finally have a use case for it, so I'm trying to track down as much of the old info as is available and see what (if any) updates have been made... I've been having some luck with Archive.org, but it's been a challenge.

I have been having a ton of fun with Claude Code realizing all of the old hacky projects that I never had the skills or patience to finish. This seems like a fun one. I'll keep folks posted with any progress I make.

I think you can share your progress in a new thread. More people can see if you do.
