Topic: Clear ABS

I just ordered 1KG of transparent ABS from the unfortunately named Repraper.com in China.   It was about $42 total, shipped to the US.

http://www.repraper.com/goods.php?id=181

Despite the reputation of Chinese filament, they have been getting good reviews at the RepRap forum.

In addition to clear ABS, they have three varieties of temperature sensitive color changing ABS filaments (like in mood rings), glow in the dark, and conductive ABS.

I'm waiting to hear back about custom lengths.  There are a lot of things I would like to try out, but I don't want 1KG each.

Oh wow.

Conductive ABS sounds fun. Thanks for sharing the great find, Ian.

Re: Clear ABS

Would be interesting to see a large print done with the temperature sensitive material.

You could see where it cools the fastest.

Re: Clear ABS

The transition point is around 30c so you wouldn't see much change while printing.   That would be cool if it worked though

Re: Clear ABS

I be curious to see the material safety sheets on these before I made too many things...

Re: Clear ABS

Me and a friend just bought 5x1kg from RepRaper and it ended up costing us $27 per kg.

Re: Clear ABS

Here'shttp://hardwired.cc/?p=189 the update on one of the reviews (spoiler: not good).

Re: Clear ABS

Second review for repraper: http://richrap.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/j … -1518.html (spoiler: also contamination in the filament). That makes 100% of the external reviews negative.

Am I missing something? Are they getting good reviews elsewhere?

Re: Clear ABS

Here is my review of the clear - http://solidoodletips.wordpress.com/201 … -filament/

The reviews you linked to were for 3mm PLA, both probably from Esun.  I don't know if they are the only manufacturer in China.  I have printed a full roll of red 1.75 ABS from 3D Printer Stuff and half a spool of white from Octave, which are also Chinese filament, but I don't know if they are also from Esun.  I haven't had any problem with those, or seen any bulges, bubbles, or signs of contaminants.

The clear ABS may be from a different supplier, or the process may be different.  I've written to Repraper about the bubbles and specks in the clear, but haven't heard back.

Re: Clear ABS

I received a clear 1.75mm sample from Aussie supplier 3D printer gear. Haven't printed with it yet, but it seems to contain no bubbles or foreign matter.

Are you going to vapor bathe that cup to see how it looks smooth?

Re: Clear ABS

I did, but it looks mostly the same.  Enough of the pattern seems to be created where the layers bond that it is unaffected by surface smoothing.  Something that I've been considering, which will diminish that pattern, is a motor with a gearbox like this one- http://www.phidgets.com/products.php?product_id=3317  The S1 had a gearbox like this, and if you look at the pictures of the prototype in the Solidoodle store you can see one there as well.   Removing the gearbox was a concession that had to be made to keep the cost down.  Removing it did however make room for the fan and heatsink which have turned out to be essential.

I'm not sure if the motor for the extruder needs a particular specification beyond the size.  I would need some sort of adapter, or long screw shafts to mount the acrylic since it doesn't have holes to line up with the gearbox.  I would also need to make a mount to place the fan and heatsink on top of the motor rather than behind.

The moire pattern you see on the straight sides of prints is caused by a slight pulsing of the extrusion as the motor stops between steps.  With a gearbox, the motor will need to spin faster, so instead of something like 110 steps per mm, it would take 1100 steps/mm which would completely smooth out the motion of the extruder gear.

Have you seen the 3d printers where the extruder motor is mounted to the body of the printer and the line fed through a flexible tube to the extruder?

That might work in this case, and it should give the head a little less weight, which should allow you to speed up printing too.

Re: Clear ABS

Adding a Bowden cable like the Ultimaker uses would certainly be an interesting mod, especially combined with the high speed printing you can do with the current Marlin.  That would make it an "Ultidoodle".  The build instructions for the Ultimaker are online, you could study those for some insight on how to incorporate the tube.  It adds some complexity, and I've read that oozing is a problem.  Retraction isn't as easy when there is a long length of filament between the extruder and hot end.

Ultimaker is quite proud of their print speed, I'm not sure if it's Solidoodle's top concern at the moment. I wouldn't mind seeing the mod either.

Re: Clear ABS

I'm actually more interested in the mod as paving the way for dual extrusion.  If the motors can be moved outside, then the hot ends might be moved close enough together that there wouldn't be too much build area lost in the X direction.

I want dual extrusion so one could be soluable support and one could be ABS, then you could print anything you want and dissolve away the support instead of picking at it.  Then there is no impossible print.

I will say this of dual extrusion:
While we haven't modded a Solidoodle to do this yet, we have not been impressed with the results we have seen so far. Personally, I'd rather have a one nozzle set up that can switch filament mid print.
