Topic: New solidoodler

Hi all... I just bought a SD2Pro and it's still in the postal service, but I'm not new to 3D printing.

I have an existing sells mendel that I've built and tweaked... I wasn't able to get that many prints out of it. After a few months of use and 2 attempts to rebuild and re-tweak it, the old mendel parts hot end started leaking out where the PEEK barrel and the brass barrel joins... I got pretty sick of wrestling with it, so I sought to just buy a new (hopefully more reliable) one so I can just print new parts to fix/improve the mendel...

I have a USB thing holder to my name published on thingiverse. It makes a pretty good test print.

I'm hoping the SD2Pro will be much more reliable than my sells mendel, then I can concentrate on designing parts and printing instead of spending all my time tweaking my printer.

You'll still spend time tweaking your printer, I'm afraid, but you should be able to get an overall positive out-of-the-box experience.

Tweaking is a mainstay of the tech for now, but we're getting better, and getting to know your machine is probably the best outcome you can expect.

Good Luck and WELCOME!

Hi Ghostling, welcome. Well don't expect plug-and-play with SD either, but especially since you have some experience I think you will enjoy!

Re: New solidoodler

thx for the welcome.

i'd hope i won't run in to the same problems with the solidoodle as i did with the mendel. the fact that the sd2 has a riveted steel frame already eliminates a lot of points where inaccuracies can occur. The biggest problem i have with my mendel right now is the leaky hot end. I got another hotend from mixshop, but that one has a different mounting scheme than what my extruder currently has.

now that my SD2Pro is on its way I can soon print another extruder to fit my new hotend and get the mendel going again. It's an expensive way to fix my mendel, but the redundancy of having 2 printers would allow me to make parts for them to repair each other. It's really quite interesting that we're have the option to do that.
