Topic: tronxy x1 clicking and missing layers

Hello everyone,
I am new to 3d printing. I have a tronxy x1. I have secured x and y axis from wobble and added a ATX powersuppy.
The problem that persists from the start is with the extruder. The print stars ok, but sometimes one can hear a click from the extruder. But then, totally randomly, the extruder starts clicking like crazy and prints just small blobs of material. This goes on for one whole layer and than the printing resumes normally. The result is a missing layer (see picture). I did not manage to find a sollution yet. I cut the bowden tube so its ends are not angled, I cleaned the hot end and made sure there is no gap between the heat brake and nozzle.
I print PLA FILAMENTUM, my speed is 60mm/s, 0,2mm layerheight, 205C temp, no heated bed, my slicer is cura. I did not yet calibrate the extruder and also I am not sure if the heatbrake is supposed to be this long (see picture).
Any ideas and suggestions?

Thank You in advance

Re: tronxy x1 clicking and missing layers

I am going to say the issue is the heat break. The filament is getting hot and swelling in that area causing it jam up in the extruder. I would also add a fan to that hotend as well if you are going to print PLA. It really needs a fan to reduce heat creep up the hotend especially for long prints.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

I would also be checking voltages at the stepper drivers... not enough power can also result in what you are experiencing.

but definitely get a fan on that hotend to cool the upper portion properly.

Re: tronxy x1 clicking and missing layers

Hi, thanks for the hints.
I suspect the heat break to cause the problem, but I should check the voltage too. Might be worth a try.
As for the fan on the hotend, I have one, but on the tronxy it covers the whole hotend assembly so a could not take a photo with it on. Any other Ideas?

Re: tronxy x1 clicking and missing layers

Hi again and sorry for the late update.
So, I have been tinkering with my machine (tronxy x1) for a while- I checked the extruder voltage (1,02V - so ok),
I calibrated the extruder (5% underextrusion-dang), I cut the bovden tube to be paralel, I messured the filament diameter(1,9 instead of 1,75). Nothing helped everything above speed 40mm/s and 0,15 line-width caused extensive clicking and or missing layers.
The problem had to be in the hotend assembly. So I have taken it completely apart and found a small metal flake stuck in the heaterblock thread. This caused the heatbrake and nozzle to not meet and a cavity formed. The thread was quite busted too. I also added heat conducting paste (as in a e3d hotend) to the threads between the heatbrake and cooling element. Besides that I exchange the brass nozzle for a steel one. Once correctly assembled the whole thing works quite fine. 60mm/s 0,2mm is no problem and underextrusion also disappeared.
Moral of the story: Chinese quality control is awesome.
