Topic: [2.0a duo] filament broke in feedingtube

Hello everyone,

My filament didn't want to load or unload. Not even when i pushed the filament.
But the brute i am i applied to must force and the filament snapped.
Right on the edge of the feeding tube to the nozzleblock.
I tried to remove the block, but it seams the filament prevents me of doing that.

I never removed the block before and of course don't want to break the printer.
Could someone help me to remove the filament so i can clean the block and use both nozzles again.

All the guides show and talk about first unloading the filament witch in my case i can not do.
So now i'm stuck and hope someone can and will help me.

I use a hex wrench that just fits the feed tube. I then heat the hotend by selecting load then push the filament through with the hex wrench. Once it almost all the way to the bottom of the tube I then can feed new filament and continue the load operation as it should be done.

Hi Carl,

Thanks for to quick reply.
I will try your tip tomorrow, it's 22.30 over here now.

I'll let you know if it has worked.

Re: [2.0a duo] filament broke in feedingtube

The main goal is just to get the broken filament far enough down that you can feed new filament without it being pushed to the side by the broken stuff.

Re: [2.0a duo] filament broke in feedingtube

I cannot get it to move!

While loading the filament will only move down about 5mm.
Unload it will bring it up to the edge of the tube, but i'm not able to pull the filament out.
It's stuck.

And if i'm loading the filament the nozzle goes like "tak tak tak tak" that's the feeder-motor trying to push the filament

Re: [2.0a duo] filament broke in feedingtube

Unload it to bring it up to the edge of the tube, fuse a new filament piece with solder iron or 3d print pen, after it completely cooled down, try to pull it out. Be careful not to melt any parts on your hotend while handling solder iron.

Re: [2.0a duo] filament broke in feedingtube

I've tried to pull it with a pair of pierce while headed to 230C and i couldn't even pull it back, so i doubt i will succeed with a piece of attached filament.

But for laughs and giggles i'll give it a try and hope i'll prove myself wrong.

I don't know if the filament has room in the feeder to form a ball at the end or get misaligned  what prevent the filament to get far enough down to be properly heated by the nozzle

Re: [2.0a duo] filament broke in feedingtube

Yesterday i printed a file with the other extruder 14hours long no problems.
just started a new print, same filament settings and nozzle.
And now halfway into the first layer this one also stopped printing and it will not load or unload
even if i apply force to the filament,
the nozzle feeder-motor is now also making this clonking sound.
Luckily this filament has not broken off.

But what is happening to my machine????
it's only been printing for 13days! 550mtr!

Re: [2.0a duo] filament broke in feedingtube

Are you using ABS or PLA? Are you using stock filament? I ask because the DUO has the same Hotend that the 1.0 has and if you print PLA for an extended period such 5 plus hours the PLA will swell in the feed tube due to heat creep caused by poor cooling a design of the hotend. They don't tell you this except in small print but to do PLA you have to buy another hotend made for PLA for the 1.0, the DUO, and the AIO. These machines where originally intended for ABS only.

If you are using ABS then it still could be heat creep or it could even be the extruder motors over heating. XYZ is notorious for over driving the current to their motors. Unfortunately the only fix for that is installing fan mounts and fans on them or Converting to a RAMPS so you have motor current control.

Re: [2.0a duo] filament broke in feedingtube

I've been printing PLA a off market brand.
But i took out the filament before, because i was trying to remove the filament from the second nozzle.
And okey i've been f*cked by the small print smile

But how do i repair this mess?
The filament is really stuck in there. And it's not possible to remove the complete block with the filament inside.
It's a catch 22 to do one i have to do the other.

Update:
I've cut the filament just on top of the metal of the nozzlebox and ran a load cycle.
But still the assembly will not come out if i use the black leaver. It will not move a mm.
I start to think there has to be a screw or retention arm to keep it from coming out.
I'm afraid if i use more force i will break something!

The cooling can probably be solved by adding fans and air ducks .

Re: [2.0a duo] filament broke in feedingtube

As a last resort you could take the hot end apart. So you only have the brass heat block and steel feed tube. Remove the thermistor and heater as well. Then using a torch you can heat the metal parts and burn the filament out several have done it here in the past.

Re: [2.0a duo] filament broke in feedingtube

but how do i take it a part?
the heating box/assembly will not come out of it's cradle.

is there a hidden screw or something?

Re: [2.0a duo] filament broke in feedingtube

As long as the filament is broken right at the top of the throat then you just press down the black release handle and the entire hotend fan assembly pops out. Then you can look at it to see what needs to be removed to make it heat safe.

I no longer have an XYZ machine so I can't supply a picture of what I mean. Post an image of you hotend from over head and I will mark what I mean.

Re: [2.0a duo] filament broke in feedingtube

Take out the screw that mount the fan, and remove the fan, you will see what's going on inside your hotend (Actually the extruder gear), you might be able to cut the filament or pull out the filament from the small opening. (See the attached picture that I steal from another post in this forum)

Re: [2.0a duo] filament broke in feedingtube

I got of the fans. But i can not reach the filament because of the pcb.
But there must be a way so i can lift the handle and remove the block?
Why can i not move it?
I heated up the nozzle to push the filament as far as i can. But still the block stays in place!!!
I will not move and i cannot get to the filament to remove it...GRRR (i'm starting to turn grey)
ps i also already removed the fanbracket

Re: [2.0a duo] filament broke in feedingtube

all you need to do is to cut the filament so that you can take it out from the top. you can clean the rest after you take out the dropin cartige.

Re: [2.0a duo] filament broke in feedingtube

If you cut all the tie wraps holding the wires to the extruder frame you just have to press down on that spring loaded black handle and the entire hotend assembly will tilt out towards the handle and fans. Leaving just the motor still mounted. You don't even need to remove the fans as they are part of the hotend assembly.

Once it is tilted out and removed you can see ho to remove the actual heated part by just removing the nut that secure the feed throat to the heat break. then the hotend and feed throat slip out of the heat break and you just need to remove the thermistor and heater core. Then you can use a torch to head the metal parts enough to burn out the filament.

Once you use the release handle that is black with the springs under it in your picture the image below is what you should have except with two hotends in one heat break and no broken heater wire. The feed throat and the nut holding it in the aluminum heat break are just behind that finned heat sink in the image. Take that nut off and the feed throat attached to the brass heat block will slide out of the aluminum heat break.

Re: [2.0a duo] filament broke in feedingtube

I know it has to tilt out when holding the black handle.
But i've even used a screwdriver to try to move the assembly.
But i will not move.
It's stuck in there and i'm afraid i'll break something.

Re: [2.0a duo] filament broke in feedingtube

The filament in the white PFTE tube on the top of the cartige is preventing the drop-in cartige to tilt out. and you can not get the filament out because the bottom of the filament is stucked. If you can cut the filament in the middle though the opening after remove the fan, you can take out the top half of the filament from the top of PFTE tube. then you can tilt out the drop-in cartige and take it out. You can then clean the rest after you take out the dropin cartige.

Re: [2.0a duo] filament broke in feedingtube

Okey finally got it out.
I've cut the filament just above the nozzle start but still i could not move it.
Finally wedged a screwdriver behind it and pride it open.

My happy feelings of owning a 3d printer where melting away by this problem.

Now the cleaning begins.
anyone some pro tips?
The filament is sitting in the nozzle "neck" tunnel(second pic)

Check Carl's instruction on #17 above. After remove the thermistor and heating element, I usually bake it in oven at 392F (200C), use tools to handle hot item and avoid get burned. The printer came with a metal stick that can push into the throat, you can push the melted filament out with that.

Re: [2.0a duo] filament broke in feedingtube

I heated the first nozzle to 240C and let it heat as must as it could.
Then pushed a peace of filament in and removed the blocking.

The second nozzle is a little bit a casualty of war.
The temp sensor connector broke off i first have to fix that before unclogging it.

what a trip to fix this mess!!!! How said 3d-printing is easy LOL

[UPDATE]
Looks like the second one is clear to.
Bit need to make a better fix to the temp sensor connector.
I "Soldered" the wire to the connector, but the contact is now touch sensitive.
I will re-build the printer tomorrow and do a test run to see if it works again.

What upgrade do you guys recommend for this **** printer?

The people who are trying to profit off those that dive in without research.

Really anyone who has been printing will tell you it is touchy and not for those who just want to things to work.
