Topic: Monoprice Select Mini V2

https://3dprinting.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/217111.jpg

Well folks I did it again . Bought a new printer.  This is a little guy I figured a good one for potrability . to take to shows.
I love my I3 clone and i have taken it to shows but this is a bit smaller and cleaner looking.
I know one of the complains about these is the noise. But I already have an idea for an upgrade that should speed this puppy up and quite the motors.  It is a used E bay deal so waiting for the brown truck to show up with it in a few days.

Re: Monoprice Select Mini V2

My first 3D printer is Monoprice Select Mini V1. Very good printer, super noisy, but print very fast and very good print quality. V1 have problematic hotend but V2 improved with E3D style hotend. V1 have No pot on mainboard so adjust motor current is not possible, However, V2 mainboard have pot and therefore you can make it quieter by adjust motor current carefully.

Heated bed need redo the wiring otherwise the bed movement will cut the wire. Maybe picky on sd cards. <2GB sd cards work best but hard to find. USB connection may not stable if use cheap USB cable, but print with wifi works very well (only recognize WiFi 2.4 GHz b/g/n, make sure your wifi router use different ssid for 2.4G and 5G). There is a setting to enable faster wifi upload.

Re: Monoprice Select Mini V2

Ok the printer is here and works fine .
But I have a stupid question i sliced a file like i have many times before . and  RH saves the file with a .gco file extension and it seems the new machine needs a .gcode  file extension  and it does not appear windows ten allows one to change file extensions.
the rh file output seems to be set for a .gcode extension .
I know i could likely set up for wifi or run directly from the laptop or even use an old laptop to change the file extension. Had anyone else ran into this problem.
Can someone please help.

Re: Monoprice Select Mini V2

Problem solved I think . seem like i have to save the file  and print it rather than saving for sd print  hmm strange but seems to work.

Re: Monoprice Select Mini V2

If you need to change extenstion name in windows 10, in windows explorer, click view in menu and click options. Then in the new window pop out, click view tab, in the advance setting box, uncheck hide extensions for known file types. then click ok. Now all your file will show up with extension and when you try to rename it, you can change extension name.

Re: Monoprice Select Mini V2

In Repetitor-Host, save the file and save for sd print are different. Save for sd print will include start gcode and end gcode and options to use binary gcode file. May or may not be important.

Re: Monoprice Select Mini V2

Alternatively, if you want to Save for sd print to use other extension name, after click Save for sd print, click save, the under the filename input box, there is save as type, change it to All files (*.*), then you can type in the file name with .gcode or anything as extension name. This method works for almost all software.

Re: Monoprice Select Mini V2

Mr He thank you once again for your help.
turns out this was a matter of operator head space aka mental gas.
turns out it was not an extension issue i was simply turning the knob in the wrong direction.
Even after years of experience a new machine can throw one for a loop. Oh well lesson learned .
and thanks again for your assistance.

Re: Monoprice Select Mini V2

No problem. I only have Monoprice Select Mini V1. It do recognize .gco extension file, but file with other extension will not display. Since you have Monoprice Select Mini V2, I'm not sure it will recognize .gco file.

One thing I don't like about this machine is the direction of the knob, it would be a lot easier if the direction is reversed.  I also highly recommend this knob, it make the knob turning a lot easier. Don't print in gray color though.

Be careful when you take out the orginal knob, you need to take out the front panel before remove the knob in my V1, I thought I can just unplug it from front and end up made some imperfect damage. Luckly it is not obvious and don't affect the use.

Re: Monoprice Select Mini V2

I have had this Pinter for a couple weeks now . Have not done any printing since the show. I did have the printer running at the show. I need to slice my file with increased retract had it set for 1 mm seems like 2 mm is what this machine likes at least according to the settings i downloaded for it.
I am a little confuses as to the materials it will really print. this printer comes with a stock "E3D Hotend" wit is an upgrade from v1 however the spec sheet says it is a an ABS/ pla machine.
the select will print just about anything.

Re: Monoprice Select Mini V2

The stock setting works mostly for ABS and PLA. The max hotend temperature is 230C, and the max bed temperature is 60C. the bowden setup and aluminum print bed are the limiting factors. Since it don't have case, the printing of ABS in cold temperature are also questionable. However, people have put all kinds of mod on it and able to print bout anything on them. You can even extend the bed to 250X120X120mm.

Re: Monoprice Select Mini V2

I am thinking about getting one of these printers.
They seem to be pretty well documented and ready for tinkering.
Any regrets? Would you do it again?

Build volume is small, but very portable. Check their facebook group
https://www.facebook.com/groups/1717306548519045/

People are nice and active, everyone seems to be happy with their print despite all the issues and troubles they experienced.

Also check MonoPrice Maker Select V2 and PLUS group and ask them for oppions.

Let's hope people don't think I work for MonoPrice.

Again I got this one " Used " on e -bay for IIIRC 129 dollars.
it works out of the box it is a solidi little machine.

Now for the negatives. These are small but observations.  The buildtak type  plate did not last. it holds pla realy well and does not want to let go.

So i printed a little mod removed the build material and put a small glass plate on.

The Pinter interface seems a little awkward and limited options . the color screen looks like a touch screen so one want to touch it to make it work.  then you need to touch the knob. To touch the knob you have to reach under the build plate. so not the best human engineering.  third the  firmware is not open source so you can not go in and mod it to your liking  like Marlin.
4th it is questionable what materials this machine can really handle.
So do I regret buying  this machine no I do not.  Does it have the true open source capability I would like to se again the anser is no.
Another option is the power spec from Wahao
A little lower on the retail defending where you purchase and the control placement seems better. it is basically a mirror image of the machine I have. The power supply is built into the base. And it has a more basic control that appears to have a few more features. But you are loosing the heat bed.

http://www.microcenter.com/single_produ … fa3f1f8121

And then there is this one
https://www.gearbest.com/3d-printers-3d … 57480.html

This one does have touch screen control but again they ditched the heated bed.
And it appears the touch screen is readily accessible.

And at less than $ 200 one can always gut one of these add a ramps board and hack to there hearts desire.

All three have decent reviews on  you tube and will print out of the box and are a good value.

Can any of them accept marlin and really be tuned  I can not answer that. I just do not know.

What i do know is mono price hit a home run with the mini at this price point and other manufacturers are rushing to get there own version to market. So expect to see more variations on this theme.

So I guess pick the one that seem right for you and give us a review.

Respectfully
Tin Falcon

As far as would I purchase this machine if I had to do it over.  I really do not know the choises change like every week

Be warned any three D printer you need to learn slicing programs.

Re: Monoprice Select Mini V2

Have not personally tested, but I found this on github

https://github.com/asantoni/marlin-mono … elect-mini

It is based on Marlin 1.1, I'm still looking for instructions on how to flash it. The configuration states the board is RAMPS1.4, but offical website state the processor is 32bit. Maybe this is for RAMPS converted MonoPrice Select Mini.

Re: Monoprice Select Mini V2

Yes, facebook account is required. I actually find facebook account worth the effort to get, because you can login many other (non-essential such as forum) account with your facebook account so that you don't have to remember so many logins.

Most of the facebook group also ask you some question and you need to waiting for approval, I don't really like this process, but on the other hand, they can keep jerks outside by doing this, which is kind of nice.
