Topic: Prints start okay but then skip layers

I have an XYZ Da Vinci 1.0w printer. It used to work fine for over a month after I bought it. But now prints frequently fail somewhere in the middle. I get a perfect looking bottom part, and then there are skipped layers or spaghetti all over the place. Even if the print succeeds I sometimes observe the nozzle being completely encased in PLA, so I need to use the Clean Nozzle function to free it.

Things I've already done:
- Cleaned the extruder module by pushing the thick wire in from the top when hot, pushing the PLA out and thoroughly cleaning the nozzle.
- Cleaned the stepper motor (which was sometimes making clicking noises). First just with the small brush, then by following the video instructions from XYZ to open up the stepper motor and clean it with a metal brush.
- Calibrated the z-offset
- Set the z-offset manually for the nozzle to be one business card thickness away from the print bed, and made sure the distance was the same on the four corners of the print bed.

As I repeat the cleaning and z-offset from time to time, I noticed that the resulting z-offset value isn't always the same. Once it had changed by as much as 0.5 mm, which is quite a lot. So I was wondering if my problems could result from the distance of the nozzle to the last layer changing during the print. And if it was that, how would I fix that?

Re: Prints start okay but then skip layers

I have Windows 10 3D builder, but in spite of the Microsoft site saying that 3D Builder supports the XYZ Da Vinci 1.0w, I haven't managed to get the software to recognize my printer over Wifi. Any idea?

you need setup your Da Vinci 1.0w to connect to your home wifi router first.

Can you post image? hard to tell what is the problem. Also please notice if your filament on extruder is broken when this happens.

My Da Vinci 1.0w is already connected to my home wifi. I print via wifi with XYZWare, but can't access it with Microsoft 3D Builder.

Okay, image attached. No broken filament visible.

Re: Prints start okay but then skip layers

I think your hotend is overheating. this happens when you print with PLA, if the metal fin above nozzle is not cooled efficiently, your PLA filament will melt and expand here and prevent it from enter nozzle. Double check your fan speed and case fan. avoid block air circulation on hotend fan. Make sure your fan is blow wind toward you(Front), not toward the metal fin.
