I personally would not buy a davinci for the simple fact they are not an open source based design.
The Monoprice mini is a nice little printer. Not a lot of money and a good starter printer. something to learn on and see if you like the hobby.
a wanhao I3 is another possibility

or the monoprice version of the I3

you will need to put some effort into a sub $500 printer but you can get decent prints with some tuning and attention

the one draw back of the MP mini it is a mini iirc a 4 in print bed. as opposed to an 8" bed on an I3. But you can print plenty in a 4" cube area and will take a good hour or two .
I have an aluminum frame I 3 kit . I have seen both the mini and the wanhao in a friends shop/showroom and they are decent printers actually the wanhao has some improvement over what I have . real lead screws and a layer fan.
as an open frame design No case enclosure these are all mostly pla printers.
Also there are many on this forum that have xyz brand printers .
so you may want to read others experience with them .
If you like DIY you can get the Prusa i3 it's being sold just under $600 ($599). Great customer support (if you get the original) a lot of features and easy enough to assemble. The customer reviews are a lot higher for the Prusa i3 than the Da Vinci 1.0, or anything else in the sub $600 range. Another cool thing about the Prusa i3 is that it's all open source. You can actually print out some of the parts used by the Prusa i3 with the Prusa i3.

I think the Prusa i3 kit is kind of the standard bearer as good printer for the money right now. It's especially attractive to me, because of it's multi-filament add on.
However, I just bought a maker select mini v2, and it's printing better out of the box than my S3 ever did. Maybe I can print some high quality lawsy parts and finally fix the other one.
this one lol
the one that works! ![]()
asking this kind of question is like asking what is the best car out there - there is no real "correct" answer, and it will be different for everyone.

I have 6 Davinci 1.0's. It's a great printer when you put Repetier Firmware and a different print head in them. One of my main boards went bad so I replaced it with a Ramps 1.4 with LCD. It now runs so quiet and better than all the others. The bones are great for the money. I have a Geeetech G2s delta I like a lot. Just finished a Tronxy X1. Great PLA printer KIT for the money. If your handy start with this one to learn the ins and out 3d printing. It's only $150.
