Topic: Streaks

So, I've just done a mod to print on aluminum.  One thing I'm noticing is that sometimes it looks like the plastic doesn't extrude, so on the surface of my model, it leaves streaks, or lines where the fill layer shows through (ugly).  Now, I've done a number of things putting things, any of which might have caused this:

1)  I cut an aluminum plate and put kapton on it.
2)  I releveled the bed
3)  I brushed out shavings in the piece that pulls in the filament.

So I'm thinking either
1)  The bed/aluminum isn't level
2)  When I brushed out the plastic shavings, I only did one side, so it is slipping on the other (I just tried to clean out the other side while I'm printing to see if that improves things.  Doesn't look like it.
3) ??

Any ideas what is happening?  I could switch back to printing on the standard bed and see if that fixes it. (included picture to show what I'm seeing.)

Re: Streaks

I would blame that on filament not coming through properly.

1. Not enough tension on extruder spring.
2. Ground filament clogging the extruder gear.
3. Extruder temp dropping lower in patches or too low in general. This increases the difficulty in pushing the filament through cleanly, and result is the skinny patches that are leaving gaps in the horizontal surfaces.

Which ever it is, notice how the perimeters are fine but just the straight infill sections have the gaps?

The print head travels faster in these sections, exaggerating any of the above problems.

Re: Streaks

I tightened up the extruder spring screw slightly, and that seemed to fix it.  Thanks!

Re: Streaks

What is it that you're printing, if you don't mind my asking?

Had to look it up, but cool

There's a method someone had here for applying ink like a transfer label to printed parts.  Then you'd have the texture and the color really quick.

Cool - I'll have to look that up.  Thanks!
