Topic: How to print top of sphere or hemisphere? Supports?

About to print some fake 1920's 01A vacuum tube replacements with clear ABS, modelled in openscad, see BMP.
Will a hollow sphere (tube top) print without internal support, 'cause the top is pretty flat? Tube diameter is about 35mm.
Don't want to print "glass" part upside down or multipart as I want the tube top to be smooth and round.
Black tube base prints just fine as separate part.

Any slicing or printing suggestions?

The domed top should not give you too much of a problem printing without support.  Each previous layer should offer a good foundation for the next.  Make sure to turn off Support in your slicer.

The middle will likely not be clean.

Re: How to print top of sphere or hemisphere? Supports?

it kind of depends on how many perimeters you are using... a single wall will have issues at the top.
3 or 4 will print much more cleanly, especially if you use a fine layer height.

the stand alone version of Slic3r does have the capability of changing layer heights at specific points. you can use a larger layer height for the bulk of the print, then reduce it for the top few.

Thanx for the tips, will try this weekend.

I was thinking about this may help to increase the perimeter count.

Got a good print, put it up on thinigiverse.

Using Repetier Host with its built in Cura - will try standalone Slic3r to add more perimeters at top as suggested.
Thanx to everyone here for 2 years of tips and mods for that @#$%$ Press which now works.

See my design and print-Bowling Pins, 6 1/2" (165 mm) high, no supports needed!

Re: How to print top of sphere or hemisphere? Supports?

AOYOU3D I wasn't worried about external supports near the bottom, but some kind of internal support near the top. What slicer settings or ?? did you use to get the tops to close cleanly?

Re: How to print top of sphere or hemisphere? Supports?

I had used Cura for this model, wall thickness is 2 mm, there is no any internal support.

The point is the slope angle must be equal or greater than 45 degree.

http://soliforum.com/i/?LjXXUVl.jpgI print this without support and it comes out perfect. 2MM thick, ABS.

Re: How to print top of sphere or hemisphere? Supports?

I am interested in that how you made the flat top surface of this box without the supports,
what kind of printer you used, use FDM technology or others?
Can you show us the picture of the real prints?

The internal vertical structures act as supports which are adequate to let the plastic "bridge" across them to ultimately form the upper solid layers.

Re: How to print top of sphere or hemisphere? Supports?

Can you show me the real printed part (internal)?

I don't think the internal structure ribs are enough

to support such large top layers (inside), unless it is a

very small part.
