Topic: Noise level of my printer

I have a Makerbot Replicator 2x amd my wife said it is loud so I downloaded a DB meter for my cell phone
from 10 ft away it reads 50 db when doing 40% infill. when printing where i had long travel time  it was 35 DB.

how loud are the other brands.

Re: Noise level of my printer

will have to pull the sound meter out next time i print.
35 - 40 db is typical noise
30 soft whisper
40 quiet residential area
40 quiet office, library
50 rainfall
50 refrigerator
60 normal conversation

without a bunch of testing IMHO sounds like a reasonable noise level for a machine like a 3d printer.

Re: Noise level of my printer

Using an SPL meter app called SPL Meter of all things with a relative function to zero out background noise like my AC. My CTC puts out an average of 15Db at 1 foot away. At 10 feet it is about 5Db. So yes there are some very quite printers out there if you tune them correctly.

You want to set vref on all motors so it is just enough to move them with out binding and no more. This also helps them run cooler which will let them last longer as well.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

You would need to do it through the host such as RepG. I am not sure if the stock version firmware allows that setting to be accessed however. I used sailfish on mine CTC clone at first which is the same printer as what you have. I got tired of the restrictions of the mightyboard and it's unique file format. So I swapped it out for an Azteeg X3 PRO and a VikiII LCD from Panucatt devices.

Make mags review of the Microcenter version of the maker bot clone lists max noise at 68db .
So your printer may be just a little noisy.

That's true! I mean, a friend of mine was using it some time ago and he was constantly complaining to me about that issue.

Re: Noise level of my printer

What portion of the printer is making that noise?  I've recently upgraded my printer to the DuetWifi controller and its QUIET.  I don't have a meter, but you can check the videos online from others.  Now, the the loudest parts are the 30mm fan on my hot end cooling fins.  I'm literally 15 feet away from printer and I can hardly hear it printing now.  I would rate the noise in the mid 20's at most.  I did convert all my fans to extremely low noise fans from Noctua.

Re: Noise level of my printer

What you hear in the video is the actual noise levels of the motors and all the fans on.  My printer is even more quiet since I have lower noise fans.  My fan on the controller is rated at 16dB levels.  I don't know the rating on the hot end fan, but its half the level of my original fan.  I used to know the printer is doing fine a room away just by hearing the noise.  Now I have to check every 20 minutes to see if there is a problem since I cant hear anything.
