Topic: Filawinder motor not stopping

The motor on the winder doesn't stop if the 4th photo sensor is triggered. It's as if there is some form of loop that it goes into once the 4th sensor is triggered. Even moving a piece of filament in front of the top sensor by hand doesn't stop it. It works fine if the filament only reaches the 3rd sensor but as soon as it hits the 4th the motors starts spinning at full speed and breaks the filament. Re-calibration  hasn't helped at all. The only thing I've been able to notice is the servo twitches every time the motor eventually stops turning. Anyone else having this problem or know of a solution?

I've run into that myself, but only if I haven't properly calibrated before each use. I've also noticed that after proper calibration, if the filament glides too close to the laser, then sensors will not function (which I assume is due in part by dispersed shadowing). Have you checked to make sure you haven't flipped the sensor plug during assembly?

I am new to the Filawinder and light sensors, but it seems to me that if the plug is in reverse, and first senses the darkest of light, which causes the motor to turn faster than the brightest of light, it would thus be a plug issue. I am still learning, so I hope someone can prove me wrong in some detial to prevent further misinformation. EDIT: Ian has proven me wrong below

The plug is keyed, so it can't be reversed.   Is this the first use, or has it worked properly before?  There might be a problem with the cable.  What happens if you tape over the bottom sensor and then calibrate it, and run on 3 of them?

I have had this issue as well at times, usually when running unattended and don't notice till it breaks and then filament ALL over the floor, but haven't seen others having the same issue.  Now, I may have to investigate more.

Had her for a few months now, with minimal issues, this one is new, seems to be some sort of a loop that only moving the servo can fix.  The arduino also flashes oddly when it enters this loop and again flashes upon it stopping.  I will try the sensor trick and let you know.  (I think I accidentally reported the post instead of quoting though..).  We soldered the leads directly to the board for the power supply thinking that may have been the issue.  Will report back soon!

Just tried the cal covering the bottom sensor with some black tape, no luck, if you go below the 3rd sensor it goes into its loop.  I do notice the lights blink for an instant on the laser as well.  We have tried reflashing the arduino, but cannot get it to be recognized by the computer and an attempt at a driver install crashed a windows 8 machine lol, so that is a bit of a no go.

Just counted how much filament we have made with it, north of 40kg so far. I can try reseating the cable.

Sorry for the GIF, but 40kg is cool to hear. I'm sure we'll get the winder problem sorted eventually, even if it means an exchange of the electronics.

Since the power cuts at the bottom of the loop no matter which sensor it is,  I wonder if the motor is drawing too much current.  In manual,  if you rev the motor up and down quickly, does it do the same thing?

You're a goober Tim lol, we have extruded over 40kg for sure! Mind you, we are getting about a kg every 24 hours, even at a 1.98mm nozzle diameter.. 164c temp as well.

Update: resoldered and shrink tubed all the wires going to the board. No luck, the motor still goes into loop both on auto mode and manual mode.
