Topic: Do all filaments have that toothed texture?

I don't know what it's called but you know when you run your fingernail down a line of ABS or PLA it has that texture to it? I just bought a spool of Hatchback ABS and the filament has no texture and is completely smooth. Is that normal or is this spool defective?
I ask because I've only purchased PLA from hatchbox and all their PLA has the texture. All my ABS has been from sainsmart which also had that texture. Anyhow I'm just curious if I need to request a replacement spool. Thanks.

Should be fine. I never had any Hatchbox filament but the natrual ABS that comes with the Da Vinci is completely smooth too.

To be honest, I haven't come accross any filament that isn't completly smooth.

Really? All the filaments I've ordered in the past have had a texture you could feel by scratching your fingernail down the line. Here is an image of one of my ABS filaments. I messed with the filter of the image so you can better see the texture I'm talking about. http://soliforum.com/i/?LAODMcy.jpg

It's like a subtle ribbed texture more than a toothed texture. But both my PLA and ABS have had them in some form. Both different brands. Never checked the abs they came with the da Vinci.

That's called sharkskin:

It generally occurs as a result of melt flow instability. Not likely to cause print issues, though.

Ditto

I am not what One would call a high volume user . but I have purchased  several rolls of material over the years from cheap inland brand to colorbar and have never noticed any particular ribbing texture or sharktooth.

The CF bronze fill hsa a little texture but everything else is shiney smooth.

Re: Do all filaments have that toothed texture?

Yes ABS filament usually has a very smooth finish to it whilst PLA has more of a rough, matte feel to it.

However, we've never come across filament with this "sharkskin" effect.
