Topic: Getting Started

So far I have spent a couple days trying to get my Solidoodle 2 to do anything other than run its cooling fan and diode lights. I have sent e-mail back and forth between myself and support, but haven't gotten much in the way of detailed instructions on how to get started, and the online instructions here on the site appear to be outdated perhaps for SD1. Honestly I have no idea how many different softwares I might need to get this printer to do anything, least of all print something.

Re: Getting Started

Hi Rocketman,

It can be a bit confronting at first, but the following guides on the SD site were what I used to get mine up and going:

First install software: http://www.solidoodle.com/how-to-2/how- … -software/
Then install filament: http://www.solidoodle.com/how-to-2/how- … -filament/
Finally print something: http://www.solidoodle.com/how-to-2/how-to-print/

Once you get the software installed it's fairly straight forward. SD also have a nice installer on their site that includes most software needed to get you going from scratch.

Post back with any questions you might have and we'll try and help smile

Re: Getting Started

I've already installed that one software, but haven't been able to get any feedback from the printer. Do I need the "Python" software as well or just the one software you gave a link to? Using that software it appears to load the text object I want to build, and when I push something it appears to slice the object into "G code" that the printer should be able to use, but I don't know what to do next to make it print. It doesn't even seem to have a button that says, "print" nor a button that says extrude so I can send through that short segiment of filament that is there from when I got the printer. And when I play around with buttons like the ones that are supposed to heat the platform or the extruder the degree numbers appear to go up, but the printer parts appear to remain cold. And in fact when I hit those buttons the numbers go up even when the printer is not connected to the computer so I don't even know if the software knows how to connect to the printer.

Re: Getting Started

Hi Rocketman, once you get the hang of it it is pretty straight forward and simple it just seems daunting at first smile

Ok, first off what platform are you using to put the software onto... Linux, OSX, or Windows?

second give us some details of what you have installed or tried to install and what order.

The main thing you need for the computer to talk to the printer is the FTDI drivers, these are for accessing the arduino chip that actually is the brains of the SD2 -->http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

Hopefully we can get you up and running pretty quick, don't be afraid to post plenty of details on your setup and what you are trying to accomplish and the steps you have done... it will make it easier to give you the correct information on what you need to do smile

Re: Getting Started

Windows 7.

I've installed, "setupRepetierHostSolidoodle_0_82.exe" successfully

I tried to install pyserial - 2.5, but it needed some kind of directories, and I'm not sure if I need that software or not. The instructions on what I need and don't need are not clear.

I am downloading the drivers now. I will test the printer again soon. I was also unclear on if I needed to manually look for drivers like the old days or if the hardware would download them for me.

Re: Getting Started

Is "CDM 2.08.24 WHQL Certified.zip" the file I need? There doesn't appear to be any run file to install this stuff.

If you are using repetier host, you wont need pyserial. If you decide to install pronterface, you will need it. The issue you are having is probably caused by the fact that you need install Python before Pyserial. That said, if repetier works for you, stick with that.

The driver site should have an automated installation binary.

Yes, that is the correct file. just d/l it then unzip it somewhere(you may not have to ... I think win7 can look inside zips now) then plug in the printer(if it isn't) and if a requester pops up asking for drivers just point it to where you saved/unzipped the CDM 2.08.24 whql.... file otherwise get into the control panel/device manager and find the unknown usb device and update the driver with the CDM........ files location smile

Re: Getting Started

Is there a location I should place the folder of driver since there is no .exe file to place stuff for me? I don't want to keep it with the rest of my stuff where it can easily be deleted. So far I've received no messages asking for drivers.

I have however received the message:

"Too many objects on printer bed for automatic packing. Packing disabled until elements are removed."

which I have no idea what it is saying.

Re: Getting Started

Yeah, it says that all the time you use the main 'load' button nothing to worry about, just use the 'add object' button on the bottom and it won't give you the error... however the error doesn't matter anyway smile

as for the file folder just pop it under windows anywhere should be fine as long as it isn't in your downloads or documents dir it should be fine smile

Re: Getting Started

You should have a connect button in the upper left corner of RH. Click that. If you have the right com port chosen and drivers installed, you should be able to connect to your printer. If you click on the Manual control Tab, you should see that you are connected or disconnected. If it gives you the message "5 commands waiting to be processed" you may not have the right com port or baud speed chosen. The solidoodle runs at 25000 BPS. Once it is connected, you can slice the object and click the Run button to start your print. It will take a while to start because your printer bed and hot end will need to come up to temp but you should see some minor movement with your hot end while it positions itself.

Re: Getting Started

I have been able to slice an object up and produce "G code" but I don't know how to tell it to print. "Run job" doesn't seem to do anything. I've only been able to slice the object up.

13

Re: Getting Started

rocket man i was having that problem. I found out that i had not changed the com port over once you dothat you should be able to print

14

Re: Getting Started

What is the com port? How do I change it, and to what?

15

Re: Getting Started

Gordym tried to explain this earlier.  RH can slice without being connected to a printer, but in order to successfully run the job, you need to connect RH to the printer.  You need to know which COM port your printer is on.  You could do this by going into the Device Manager and connecting and disconnecting the printer from the computer, and noting which COM port appears and disappears.  Then click on the Connect icon in RH and select the correct COM port.  You should see some status information appear at the bottom from the printer.  After that, the Run Job button should work.

16

Re: Getting Started

The Com port settings are listed under the Printer settings option on the Config menu in RH.

Re: Getting Started

"Virtual printer" is the only choice in the drop down under COM selections. And when I went to device manager an icon does show up when I plug the printer in, but it has a yellow warning icon over it. It attempts to find drivers automatically but comes up empty so clearly it doesn't realize I already downloaded drivers for it, and it doesn't really specify a number for the USB port I plugged the printer into.

Did you follow the installation instructions and download the ardrino drivers?

OK, here is where you have to tell windows where you saved the drivers.

Re: Getting Started

Ok. Customer support showed me that there was a .exe installing version of the drivers so now I have been able to get the printer to interact with the software. So now the following:

How do I extrude the remaining filament from the printer? (The small strand in it at delivery)

How do I clean the build plate?

How do I clean extruder tip after each job?

And how do I load the start of the long filament that I bought with it? And should I need to unravel enough of it before each job, or should the printer be able to pull it right from the roll without trouble?

I tried to run the first model I loaded and it appeared to start it, but the plastic wasn't sticking to the platform at all. It was just forming and sticking to the extruder head, and I had to basically wipe it off with a flat head screw driver.

Re: Getting Started

You will want to back the fillament out of the extruder, to accomplish this get the extruder up tp temp then down in the lower middle left of the control csreen for RH is the extruder section just click on the up arrow wait a few secs. then click again... you may have to do this a few times until the fillament comes completely out stringy strands and all smile then put the new fillament in and click on the other arrow(down) a few times until the new color fillament appears(or the same color)

you can clean the bed with acetone and a paper towel(works best) if you don't have acetone use rubbing alcohol or dish soap.
you shold not need to clean the tip... I never have smile seems to work ok for me wink

Re: Getting Started

Sorry I an in the office and kinda rushed right now, so I missed part of your post

as for the not sticking part you need to level the bed even though the bed was level at the factory shipping vibrations and such throw it out of level... there is a video link to youtube here somewhere that shows how I think and also setting the z axis level.

and the spool should feed just fine from the back of the machine just watch it for the first few minutes to make sure it feeds off without jumping off the spool.

Can you offer a screen shot? I can't find any special controls on the left side for the extruder.

Rocket man the extruder controls are under the manual Control tab and it says retract on the bottom of the tab. I hope this helps and a screen shot
