Topic: da Vinci 1.0 Temp Sensor Problem

Hello, Soliforum!
I have been using my da Vinci 1.0 for about a year now, with very few issues. A few weeks ago, I started it and the bed temperature started rising like normal, but the hotend temp stayed at 10C. I called XYZ support and they said to replace the hotend completely. I looked online and saw that some people have been having issues with the thermistor and heating element wires, so I took apart my hotend and found that the thermistor wires were frayed and one was broken, so I replaced it. In the process of doing such, I broke the fraying wire of my hotend, so I replaced that as well. Everything is put back together, and I tried turning it on, but the temperature still stays at 10C. The extruder is heating up, and I have verified that there is no short in the thermistor. Ambient temperature seems to be giving me a resistance of 140-150 kOhms, and when the printer starts heating up, it decreases until the printer goes into thermal shutdown.

I'm fine with buying a new nozzle, but I don't know for sure if it will work. If my nozzle is heating up and the thermistor is behaving nominally, then I would assume the problem must be further down the line, but it seems like too much of a coincidence for 3 problems to occur simultaneously

Can anybody give me advice? Any and all help is welcome.

I'm in the same boat right now. I replaced my thermistor (actually the whole hot end and heater core) after breaking it during cleaning (wasn't connected to the printer, so it wasn't shorted out).

It won't heat up above 140º before giving me a heater decoupled error. I'm hesitant in dropping $100 on a new print head because I'm not sure that will fix it. I'd kind of rather invest the money in a better printer. 

Hopefully we can find a fix.

I'm also in the same boat!

Print heat temperature monitoring was 10'C, but the print head was clearly VERY hot. 

I inspected the thermistor, and saw that it was loose in the side of the head.  I brought a new 100k thermister and installed it, same issue, again print head got very hot, hot enough to crack the JB weld that I had put the thermister in with.

I didn't have time to mess around with it so I brought a new print head (thinking that it might have been an issue with the small board located within the print head.)

Exactly the same issue still.  Temperature monitoring says 10'C, but the print head gets very hot.  I've inspected the main board at the back, no obvious issues, all connections appear to be good.


No idea what to do next!

Thermal shutdown occurs when the thermistor reports a resistance that falls outside of the range expected for safe temperature operation. It is not actually testing the temperature, but rather the resistance of the thermistor.
So, if the thermal shutdown feature is working, the heater core and thermistor are both working. What isn't working is the interpretation of that resistance to degrees celsius to display on the LCD. This sounds like a firmware problem to me. Assuming your warranty has ended, you can either wipe the firmware and try going with Repetier or try to acquire a new board.

I take no responsibility for the damage you due to your printer. Seek additional opinions and advice. Proceed at your own risk. At this point, your printer is useless, so anything is worth a shot.

Hi Kauboy,

Thanks for the thoughts.  If I want to wipe the firmware and re-install the XYZ firmware, how do I go about telling what version of XYZ firmware the printer should have loaded into it?

This probably sounds like a crap idea, but I'm running 3 other Da Vinci 1.0's and I have a process of designing parts, generating G code using Slic3r and then making the necessary mods to the G code.  The end result works fine and I would prefer to have all the printers on the same page if you get what I mean.

I had a problem like this too. What I did was to force the wires apart so there was no short and filled the gap with insulating marital such as liquid rubber.

I found out what this stuck at 10'C issue is all about: 

Faulty ground connection between the print head carriage and the rest of the printer.  If you run a jumper wire between the print head frame and the printer chassis, the sensor instantly starts working again.
