Topic: Optimize PLA filament extrusion?

I'm trying to run recycled PLA through my filastruder, but when i set my temperature too high the plastic becomes too thin. On the other hand, when I set the temperature too low the strands will be all bumpy and rough. Is there a good temperature to set the filastruder?
I set mine at 156.4 C but it is too rough, but the highest I can get before the weight of the plastic pulls the filament too far, causing a hair like strand of plastic.

I also think that the distance of the copper guide, in front of the extruder, is not placed correctly. Does anyone have a good distance that you use for your extruders?
The distance I have it is about 1inch away at a 45 degree angle from the extruder hole.

I'm trying to extrude 1.75 mm filament, but so far all of my extrusions vary from being as thin as a strand of hair to being the correct size at 1.75mm.

Re: Optimize PLA filament extrusion?

Did you dry the feed material? PLA is very sensitive to moisture.

How have you granulated the PLA? How uniform is the result? Have you tried virgin PLA first? Did you clean the barrel after the initial ABS run?

How do I dry PLA?
Can i take a hairdryer and try to vaporize the water off of the plastic?

I've been using PLA pieces from leftovers from printing so it is not virgin PLA.

No, a hair dryer is not appropriate.

So just dropping in strands of filament to the hopper? This will not yield reliable results, and the feed is not uniform, resulting in variable melt pressures.

Out of all the popular printing polymers, PLA is the trickiest to extrude well. On top of that, recycled instead of virgin is another later of complexity. Try virgin PLA first.

Re: Optimize PLA filament extrusion?

How do I properly dry the PLA?
-Acetone
-maybe a oven

6

Re: Optimize PLA filament extrusion?

Definitely not acetone. Read the sticky I linked, and the link under the PLA section.

7

Re: Optimize PLA filament extrusion?

WOW, looks like PLA needs lots of handling before extruding

I think this is my problem since I haven't been doing any of these things

8

Re: Optimize PLA filament extrusion?

But, what temperature do you think i should set the extruder?

9

Re: Optimize PLA filament extrusion?

The PlasticsToday link is geared towards the big boys, running hundreds of pounds per day. Luckily since we extrude slower it isn't as important as it is for industrial extruders, but the drier the PLA, the better.

155C sounds about right. There is no perfect temperature as there are different types of PLA, and colorant can effect melting temperature also.

Re: Optimize PLA filament extrusion?

Thanks a lot!!!!!

I think I'll try drying the PLA and running the extruder at 155C. Thanks for the quick response. I though it would take a few week but It only took 1min for a reply.

Tim (elmoret) is pretty quick to respond.  This is either his job or he needs to get back to his real one wink

Re: Optimize PLA filament extrusion?

hi all
i'm extrude pla  and i 'm using 2 heaters band one in the middle of extruder  at 171°c and another on the nozzle at 176°
and it work fine

Re: Optimize PLA filament extrusion?

I was running the PLA filament a few times with different setting like the distance of the filament guide and the distance of the fan.
I found out that I got good results with 2 filament guides, one 1cm away from the extruder at the same height and another an inch down and 4 inches from the end of the extruder.
I also found that the fan should be directly pointed at the filament RIGHT AS IT COMES OUT of the extruder.

Do you think I should make a fan guide to point the air at the tip of the extruder and what is the best guide for the filament?
My temp is set at 155C and I dried the PLA so there it is not wet.
The filament is better than last time but not good enough since the filament either sticks the the nozzle and clumps up or becomes really thin.

Re: Optimize PLA filament extrusion?

Is this set up adequate? What should I adjusted? And how can I make the filastruder extrude a thicker filament?

Re: Optimize PLA filament extrusion?

i had pla coming out at 180 for the first 1 foot then went to about 1.35mm so i messed around with it then noticed it was being stretched by its own weight so i tried cooling the filament down faster to stop so much stretch, now its 1.65 to 1.80mm, temp was 154/155 but extruding was taking 24 hours per roll of 1kg but its better than it was, noticing the pics of others, alot of people seem to be sheilding the end so more air is cuirculating the filament with out realising it. maybe a second fan but its worth a try for anyone  who is about to give up.

How are you drying the PLA?

Re: Optimize PLA filament extrusion?

after its all spooled up i put it in the middle of the oven at about 40c for 2 hours then vacum seal it. but if you mean pre dry, i dont, i put what i am about to use in a  large jar over night with a few selica jell packs in, does the job, never had a problem, living in a warm climate might help though.
After making abs colorant i dried it before extruding, just lined a baking tray with foil and pored it in then put it in the middle of the oven for about 50c for 3 to 4 hours.

21

Re: Optimize PLA filament extrusion?

Pre drying is very important to producing quality PLA from pellets. When extruding from pellets, it needs to be far drier than it does when printing.

Re: Optimize PLA filament extrusion?

i am getting the results i want by doing it the way i'm doing, 1.70 to 1.80 and prints nice, might be that i use silica gel ,air tight and the humidity in the air here is only 20%.

Re: Optimize PLA filament extrusion?

also tried a  second fan for cooling but as an exhaust fan, gives constant feed between 1.62mm and 180mm, still used the foil whats in the above pics but only on one side, temp is 160c. pla used.
