Topic: Stepper motor question

Newbie question, here...

I finally have my Atlas 3D assembled and have yet to calibrate it.  I am finding it strange that when there is no power to it, the stepper can't be turned.  I'm used to 3D printers where the stepper can be moved without power.  Is this proper?

I was able to get into the system and attempt a 360 degree rotation.  It jerked in increments for about a total of 135 degrees, then stopped.  Something isn't right.

Any thoughts?

Re: Stepper motor question

It should turn freely with the power off and stepper motor wires disconnected. Can you tell if the shaft is binding on the case anywhere? If not, the motor might be defective.

Re: Stepper motor question

When trying to turn by hand, it feels like the shaft is turning about a degree, then hitting a hard stop.

I'd check that the stepper motor is wired correctly and that none of the wires are shorting.  Shorting wires could cause the motor to act as a brake.

Re: Stepper motor question

I just pulled the stepper and disconnected all of the wires.  None of them are touching each other.  The motor has the same issue where it can't be turned and feels like it is hitting a hard stop after a fraction of a degree.

I am guessing the stepper is defective and I'll need to purchase a new one.

(perhaps in the meantime I'll open it to see if there is anything obvious inside)

That should be covered by whoever you bought the scanner from, you shouldn't have to pay for a new one.

I got it as a part of the Kickstarter.  I received it so long ago, it's my fault I didn't check.  I don't expect anyone to cover it.
