Topic: Aluminium Bed with ABS

Hi Guys

Quick question..
whats the best method for printing ABS on the Da Vinci pro with its Aluminum Bed?
Ie: what should i use to get it to stick to the bed? (kapton tape or other high heat tape etc)

Re: Aluminium Bed with ABS

I don't have much luck printing on the painters tape, or Kapton tape, so I switched to an 8 x 8 glass mirror I found at Walmart.  I then use max hold hairspray for most objects.  For large objects that will take hours, I use Oatey PVC-ABS glue found at the hardware store.
I have also used an ABS slurry made by dissolving filament in acetone, and brushing or spritzing onto the bed.  Don't be tempted to print directly on the aluminum though.  If you switch to glass, you will have to re-calibrate your z-offset.  There are videos on youtube showing how to do this.  Enjoy your new printer!

Re: Aluminium Bed with ABS

I recently started printing on a 200x200mm acrylic plate.
I'm getting very good adhesion using hairspray and the prints are very easy to remove with both pla and abs. (Didn't want to spray hairspray inside the printer, hence the removeable acrylic plate)
I have a glass bed and tried everything from glue to kapton but nothing has been as reliable as the acrylic and hairspray.

Yeah, 4 bulldog clips, 2 either side.

Re: Aluminium Bed with ABS

I've been using 2" strips of 3M Blue Painters tape. 3M, not other knock offs. I then put on two coats of Elmers Purple stick glue.

Believe me it works. If I don't use a raft it's a bitch to get the piece loose even with the metal scraper. Even with a raft it's really hard to get big pieces to release. The price I pay but well worth it.

My bed has the scratches to prove it. Since I've been using this combination I have not had a part come loose or a pull up or any warpage.

The tape shrinks a few thousands once it's up to 90C so you then see aluminum between the strips of tape when they started out butted up to one another with no cracks. The glue then gets on the aluminum in those cracks and when you remove the tape you have a line (ridge) of glue so between prints when replacing the tape I have to use acetone to clean off those glue lines.

The tape sticks so well some usually comes off with/unto the piece so the tape is only good for one print job. Course that could be because most of my prints are over 30 hours too and the tape bakes on to everything.
