Topic: heater short now wont heat

So, been messing around trying to fix a heating problem which I just managed to work around. Bought myself a new heater block etc with changeable nozzles for spares etc. Plugged it in and the two heater cartridge wires either shorted or touched or I touched something when cleaning with the wire brush I don't know. Anyway, the heater wont go above room temperature. Cold to touch. There's 12v going in to the pin on the left but not on the right. Any ideas? I have a multi meter but only familiar with basic tests.

if the board is outputting the correct voltage than I think you need a new heater cartridge

The left side is. Is that what its supposed to do? I thought both terminals were supposed to output 12v? Ive tried another cartridge and still not working.

I'm having the same problem. One thing to note, the output might not send out power if the printer is not trying to heat the core.

That was my first issue. I noticed that once I hit load filament on the printer, power started flowing through those terminals.

My issue is that now I figured that out, it won't heat up past 150ºC. It seems to be taking much longer to get to 150 then it previously did to 230ºC. I'm wondering if my thermistor isn't reading accurately. That could also be your case. If that stops working, it will think there is an error and stop heating up, giving you the dreaded "heater decoupled" message.

Mines not heating at all. Reads room temp fine. It goes to heating but never rises. I had the problem you are with the temp before. When I tried changing the thermistor. I've read about it being a particular type of thermistor but I don't think it's that. Mine would stop at certain heats and I thought it was a connection. Tried different nozzles and stuff. But sometimes the heater would heat up properly.  I was troubleshooting and trying to see what the issue was and how sometimes it was working and others not.  Wasn't just a one off. When it worked it kept working until I had the extruder back out to clean or reload or whatever. Thats when I got the short while cleaning the nozzle. So need to find out what it won't try and heat anymore as ordered a new extruder kit for 70gbp. Its also supposed to be an upgrade. I had suspected that the heater temp not getting high enough was due to trapping/moving the heater wires while trying to push the extruder into place. Was going to cut some plastic out of the way for room. Hope you get it sorted.

Many thanks mark. Actually just fixed that last night! Hah. Was probably the same thread I saw yesterday. Just waiting for an inline fuse and some better connectors and my new extruder from supplier. As I'm still having a problem heating the nozzle up to temperature. Messing with the cartridge heater does alter the results but never gets up above 180. Someone told me it needed a special thermistor instead of a generic 100k. But I have had this one at the correct temp before so I dunno. Going to swap the lot out and see how I go I guess. Let you all know how I get on. But I don't like the idea of a full extruder set to replace a thermistor that just cost a few pence. Any idea how I can find the kind of thermistor in the new extruder? I may ring the company and try and get them to let me buy thermistors in bulk.

Also ordered a laser thermometer to try and nail; down the exact issue.

Update. Scratch that. Its purely down to conductivity. The e3d hot end came like I installed it(thermistor just resting in the hole). But the thermistor is just too far away or not touching the right part of the metal. Just took out cartridge and thermistor. Set the da vinci to heat up. Manually put the thermistor on the cartridge. Heated up in like 10 seconds flat. Relieving although wish I hadn't bought a full new extruder. So any tips for good conduction?

I love my e3d its way nicer then the stock one.  I also now have a bondtech qr for the extruder and so far I am loving that extruder it has been great!  only have had it on there for one day but the test prints I have made from it are even better then what I had before.  I may ever reprint the carriage loosing some of the z height to gain back the y travel I'm not able to use due to the bondtech qr.

its an expensive extruder but I suppose you get what you pay for.
