Topic: Acrylic bed ?

Anyone tried an acrylic/perspex sheet on the bed ?
Was thinking of trying a 4mm sheet on top of the glass, seen it being used succesfully with ABS on youtube.

If you try to print PLA on it, the print will be ruined as PLA actually FUSES to the acrylic at the temps we use.. You will not be able to separate the PLA from the Acrylic.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Re: Acrylic bed ?

Thanks for the heads-up on that Carl.
I guess you could use tape on one side for PLA and use the other side for ABS.

Re: Acrylic bed ?

I have several sheets of acrylic.  I'm willing to try it!

Re: Acrylic bed ?

I've ordered a piece to try. Was going to buy a piece of glass but perspex is way cheaper.

Re: Acrylic bed ?

Well, I tried a 200x200mm sheet of acrylic (I'm using it on top of the stock glass) and it works fine with ABS. It works with PLA too after lining with kapton tape.
The only downside is that it seems to curl at the edges if you set the bed more than 45°C but it works fine without going higher anyway.
So a cheap alternative to using glass. Now on to try it with hairspray ....... smile

The acrylic curls or the print?

Re: Acrylic bed ?

Yeah the acrylic. Sorry, should have made that clearer.
Carl, would PLA work with hairspray on acrylic or would it still fuse ?

Can't answer that one, never tried..

I just know there is some sort of reaction between PLA and acrylic at the temps that we use that make the PLA seem to be glues to the acrylic. They might as well be one piece.

Re: Acrylic bed ?

Cheers. I may give it a go later. The panel only cost £3 so no big deal if it goes wrong.

Re: Acrylic bed ?

Just to update, haven't tried hairspray yet but securing the plate with bulldogclips has fixed the curling/warping issue so I can now set the bed hotter if I need to.
Must say, It's very handy having a removable plate. So much easier to clean and remove prints from.

Re: Acrylic bed ?

Ok, I just had a go with some (very cheap) hairspray on the acrylic sheet and it works REALLY well !
ABS and PLA both really easy to remove and excellent adhesion. smile
Reckon I'll be using this from now on.

Re: Acrylic bed ?

So what bed temp for ABS with acrylic?  How about warping on larger prints?

Re: Acrylic bed ?

So far, I've tried up to 60°C and it seems fine.
With hairspray, I doubt you'd need to go much higher as ABS and PLA seem to stick very well at that temp.
I tried a print last night that covered about a third of the bed and there was no warping at all.

Re: Acrylic bed ?

This is one of the biggest prints I've done so far, covers about 80% of the bed.
Printed with wood-based filament which adhered to the acrylic/hairspray great .....

Re: Acrylic bed ?

The acrylic is quite thick.   The stuff I have is much thinner.  Hopefully that won't warp more.

Did you make your z adjustment in the printer settings or with g code?

How many clips?

Re: Acrylic bed ?

The panel is 4mm thickness.
I didn't make any z adjustement, I just lowered the bed manually with the adjusters.
I use four 40mm bulldog clips. The one at the far right needs to go in front of the bed adjuster or the nozzle will slam into it.
