Topic: bricked XYZ 1.0 during repetier upgrade...

[SOLVED!...scroll down to Carl and then my reply on 7/15/05 for the solution]

The printer is now showing two lines and no lights so I assume I correctly wiped the firmware by jumping the JP1 jumper.
The problem is the computer is recognizing the device as not working(in the device manager) and an unknown device, and it isn't appointing a COM port, so I can't copy the compiled firmware from the arduino software to the printer.

It may have been a problem I caused...
During the first try, I got the Win8 device manager to identify the device and its COM port as "COM3" and I'm pretty sure it even identified it as an arduino device when i clicked on it's properties.  I was following the instructions until the time to copy over the "hardware" folder from the repetier 1.5.8 zip download to the arduino folder's "hardware" folder.  I correctly pressed the "OK" when it asks "do you want to merge the folders?" (it does this three times) but then accidently pressed "skip" when it gives you the option to "move and replace"(twice).  After that "hardware" folder replacement, then running the arduino program as instructed, and then compiling the script, I attempted to download the script to the printer....no noise or lights or conversion to the repertier on the printer as expected.  So I downloaded a compiled script made with an incomplete hardware folder.  Now it seems to be a brick...ugh.  How do i get it back?  (Please tell me there is a majic button or an SD card workaround)

Of course I replaced the "hardware" folder correctly a second time but my laptop still isn't recognizing the printer as working.  I reinstalled the xyz drivers from the disc.  No luck.

Have you tried jumping the JP1 jumper again?

Yes, I rejumped the JP1, no luck.

Re: bricked XYZ 1.0 during repetier upgrade...

Try plugging your printer's usb into your other usb ports on your pc and see if that makes any difference.  Happened to me once and found out that for some reason only one of my usb ports worked for it.

Just to be sure, I also used someone else's laptop and it also showed an unknown device when i plugged the xyz printer into it.  I hear a beep when I unplug or plug in the xyz.  I also tried all three of the usb's on my laptop because i have had problems in the past with them. I'm guessing it isn't my laptop's usb connection.  I wonder if there is a way to reflash the original software back onto it.

It identifies it as an "unknown device" in the Control Panel - USB Controllers section.

Re: bricked XYZ 1.0 during repetier upgrade...

You should ask this question over the Voltivo forum.  I think Luc can help you.  I'm guessing you'll just have to flash the firmware using the old bossac method, but I don't know enough to say either way.

Re: bricked XYZ 1.0 during repetier upgrade...

One thing you could try is updating the driver and manually installing it.
I had an issue with an XP computer yesterday which didn't install the driver correctly. Sounds a bit like the trouble you're having.
I clicked on update driver then told it I wanted to select the driver instead of auto update. I then pointed it to the Arduino driver folder and it installed fine after that.
Having said that, mine was already flashed with repetier but I'd still give it a go.

I posted to the other forum at Voltivo, thanks for the suggestion Evan.

I followed this, but computer still won't let me update.
There is one on ebay that says a similar thing to what Ive got...computer cant communicate to printer, but he thinks its a bad board but my board was fine until i messed with the upgrade to repetier.

Thanks for the quick replies and suggestions.  I'm still trying to figure it out and waiting for input on the other forum.

Anyone know if the XYZ 1.0 can be bricked permanently?

It is almost impossible to brick a Due controller which is what the Da Vinci uses. Unless you somehow erase the boot loader which is in protected memory locations you can flash it using bossac assuming you have the drivers installed or using Arduino once firmware is on it, again assuming drivers are installed.

Well, I got it to work, but there were a couple issues that should be mentioned...
I followed Dopeoner's 7 minute Youtube XYZ to Repetier instructions, and he left a couple small things out...

First, I was an idiot, and as usual I will blame others, in this case the excellent Dopesoner, for me being so.  There are two file options on the Arduino site when downloading 1.5.8, a zip file and a windows installation.  Dopesoner doesn't say which one and doesn't show that page, because 1.5.8 was the latest version when he made his video and it was downloaded from the Arduino home page, and 1.5.8 by that time was in the archive.  I downloaded the arduino zip file, not the actual arduino windows installation, and was launching the program from the unzipped files on my desktop.  Arduino actually launches and runs this way but it isn't in windows programs so it never installed the drivers that would allow me to identify the XYZ as an arduino device.  After I saw my mistake and installed it, the printer was identified and automatically appointed a COM port.  It's embarrassing to even acknowledge this happened.

Second, I ran the arduino routine "repetier" as instructed and it got an error message, it didn't recognize my printer even though now my computer clearly recognized it.  I ran it again, and voila!  it worked!...showing the message "successful" after uploading, with no error.  Just a very strange glitch with no explanation, I did nothing but run the compiler and uploader twice in a row getting two different results.  So I suppose it should be suggested to just run it again if you get an error.
BUT...

Third...NO REACTION from the printer!  Dopesoner said the printer would make noises and reset by itselft in his video.  So in frustration, I powered the printer off and on then ...finally the lcd lit up, made its noises, and showed i had repetier.  Now I'm off to print.

I thank Dopesoner, even though I would tweek the video a bit with my info.  Carl really pulled through with the info that the DUE can't be bricked, I might have junked it and moved on without that info.  Thanks to Scobo, Evan and others too, for the excellent info.

Re: bricked XYZ 1.0 during repetier upgrade...

hi, i stumbled across these posts last night 1/30/16, while trying to resolve my problem, i was trying to reload the repetier firmware, and it didnt work, in a dastardly attempt to get repetier up and working i set the model to 2(the version of the davinci with 2 extruders) i then scrolled down and set the amount of extruders to 1, i then sent this to the printer, and this is where i realized i had done something terribly wrong, the printer is no lomger recognized by my pc AT ALL, this means i cannot select it in the arduino software on my computer, i have no idea what i am doing or how to fix this so PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!
