A friend of mine needed a threaded piece. I just printed it at the initial required diameter for the die at 100% infill, and he was able to die it and thread it into a nut without problems. Printed vertically on the bed with a brim to prevent it from detaching.
I like simple solutions.

So you printed the blank horizontally and then used a die to put threads on it?
Not quite the challenge here but honorable mention

Vertical printing rods is weak due to the layering.
True, but his application was a simple thumb wheel with integrated threads on the plastic shaft. no load to speak of.
