Topic: DaVinci AiO printing in offset "steps"

Hello everyone,
How are you? I have printed several of the makerbot t-rex skulls in the past from thingiverse on my AiO (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:308335). However, recently I have been having an issue with the top half of the skull printing in the fashion seen in the attached image. My printer prints the bottom jaw just fine, and I haven't had this issue with any other file, although I haven't tried many other files lately because I have printed three of these with a similar result. I switched filament and got the same thing, albeit in a different spot during the printing process. This has happened at between the 5 and 6 hour points during the printing each time. The steps are always made going towards the front of the machine.

Of course we all know that XYZ customer support is an absolute joke. I have become used to tinkering to get good results, but I can't seem to figure this one out. Any ideas?

Those are skipped steps by that axis.  Many things can cause a stepper to skip, over extrusion, heat or even a particular area of a print that curls up and snags the nozzle.  It could be as simple as needing to lube up the mechanicals on that axis.

Thank you for your advice. I will try lubing up the rails (I do this every so often anyway) but I'm wondering why it would do most of the print just fine and then start this after several hours of working correctly. Also, this is at least the third failed print of this kind. Makes me worry that it is a larger issue.

Having personal experience with a Da Vinci myself, I can almost assure you the issue is with the endstop or endstop harness for that axis.

The endstop register by creating a low or no signal when blocked. This is a dumb idea because the same low will happen if the harness is bad and intermittent or the sensor is failing. Each time the logic sees one of these lows it will mark that as the new home and that will cause this shift.

The wiring is very low quality in these machines and not made for applications that flex a lot such in these machines.

The only other cause could be a motor driver over heating. That is easy enough to test. Just remove the back panel and place a fan so it blows on the mainboard while printing.  If it makes it further or completes then you may need to figure out a way to add a fan to the enclosure to increase airflow over the motor drivers.

Thank you Carl. If the problem is in fact the endstop harness, what exactly can I do to fix that issue?

I will try printing with a fan blowing on the motor. Perhaps the long print time of this item causes that to occur.

I really wish I hadn't bought this printer. I have had nothing but problems with it from the beginning, and the company is a nightmare to deal with. I tell everyone who asks to stay far far away from XYZ products.
