SoliForum - 3D Printing Community → Filastruder → Use Filastruder to make LayBrick type filament?
Has anyone ever tried this or have any information on how LayBrick is made? What are the component ingredients - PLA and gypsum/chalk?
I saw your reddit post, was going to respond in a bit but this works too.
No one (outside of Kai Parthy et al) knows exactly whats in Laybrick, it's a trade secret. He does say co-polyester, which tells me not PLA.
The Filastruder should handle it fine, marginally increased wear but the entire hotend (aside from the nozzle) is made of various types of steel so its would be more wear resistant than brass. I've extruded nickel plated graphite with no detectible wear to the Filastruder.

Thanks for the response. Not PLA eh, interesting....co-polyester could mean just about anything right? Some of the Eastman/Amphora stuff might work? Shooting in the dark.
I've also come across Monumental from TreeD Filaments, but its quite different in extrusion temp and printability - definitely warps and I don't really like it. Just a wild guess would be that its ABS based.
For now I will have to deal with LayBrick high cost and sourcing issues. Still testing if the market I am trying to serve is even interested. Hopefully there will be interest and I can afford to develop my own filament then.
Copolyesters are modified polyesters. An example of a polyester is PET.
That isn't to say PLA won't work, just that I don't think LayBrick is PLA.
You might be able to extract some info from the MSDS. I'll save you a little legwork, here's some:
