Topic: Peculiar extruder heater issue

I've had my printer since December and have had the typical issues with it already. The PCB connector for the extruder shorted on me and ended up snipping it and just making a straight through connection. It has worked without issue since, until now. I took apart the extruder to make sure the thermistor was working correctly, rechecked all connections and wiring and nothing looks wrong.

The issue begins when I heat the extruder for a nozzle cleaning. It heats up fine to its 210 and moves to the cleaning position. But then the fan and heater will kick off. Ive moved the extruder all over the place and noticed that it stops most often closest to the door. This was familiar when it crapped out the first time but it was obviously the connection. But I haven't the foggiest clue what it could be now.

Any help?

Finally came to the conclusion that it is indeed the thermistor. Does anyone recommend a solution? Purchasing a different extruder or xyz's specific one? New thermistor?

Any errors on the screen?
Had a similar problem that straightening the heater wires fixed. Error 0014

You SURE it's the thermistor? I thought it was too on mine but I later checked the resistance and it read correctly.

If you have a multimeter, check this out. http://www.bapihvac.com/content/uploads … r_100K.pdf
It's a chart showing temperatures for the different resistances of the thermistor.

Good luck!

Re: Peculiar extruder heater issue

If it's a bad thermistor connection, you'll either get very low temps on the lcd at room temp (around 3°C or lower) or the def error.
I had the same issue recently after a short and had the above happen when the extruder moved to certain parts of the bed. After checking the wiring harness, I discovered the yellow thermistor wire was badly damaged at various points all the way to the main board.
I replaced the whole length of the wire from the main board to the extruder and haven't had a problem since.
Like you, I also ditched the extruder pcb after installing an E3D which I would recommend if you decide to replace the extruder.
