Topic: Names please

Do you feel a little silly referring to someone by their User ID? Like "Hey, 1432vxM1951, where did you get that..."

Would you druther call him by his real name?

I have updated my Profile with my real first name. You can just call me Kent. I don't think that gives away too much personal information.

So, I would encourage all you like minded to do likewise. When someone posts something, their first name is right their in the Signature line, oddly enough.

Then this will really be a place where everybody knows your name, even if you can't get a beer.

Re: Names please

The thing is Kent, you can already do that in the identity section of your profile.  If users want to display their real name it is already an option.

Re: Names please

You have to put it in your Signature if you want it automatically displayed. The Real nae thing is only seen if someone goes to your profile and if you have chosen to display that.

Re: Names please

Yeah, well you're Iron Man. I still can't see them. Cleared my cache too. You can see them without going to our profiles or using your X-ray vision thing?

Re: Names please

So to clarify what IronMan is saying....
He can see our name once he clicks on our username and gets to our profile screen.  Not that he's seeing our names above the avatar screen.

Re: Names please

Kent

One could just use the old fashioned method and sign there posts with an appropriate name .
It makes is easier to address a particular poster.

My real nick name is jim. but I have been using Tin for so long that works also and I often get Tim .
I have never used that but sometimes people read real fast.
You are right though most folks do not sign there posts with anything and to get a simple one syllable nickname from there moniker can be awkward.
Tin or Jim

Re: Names please

most dont like the whole world knowign everything about our personal info or trying to stalk us for Identity theft. which is still a very real problem for everyone. and until it happens to you you cant imagine how horrible it gets besides death there are hundreds of other life changing effects that dont get fixed in less than many years if at all. so dont force everyone to give up their privacy. that kind of rule is why most including me leave groups. I dont need anything that bad.

Re: Names please

If you are comfortable putting your name out there, go for it. I kind of prefer not to have my proper name out in a public forum where anyone & everyone can see it.

As far as my nickname goes, I have used it for many, many years... was actually my CB handle when I was driving truck for a living. I am kind of used to it. smile

Re: Names please

I have used N2RI since 1994 when first started internet and every login or email I ever logged into has it. so its my Web handle. started as simple easy ID that tells my main hobby also. not Ham radio as those call letters have 8 varients all with 10 people waiting to use one if user dies or lets it go. I model Rock Island railroad in N scale and thats what I am into as most other interests have been given up for health or money reasons or no more room lol

I only got on FaceBook to see family pics/info of some family that cant use any other means for some reason, then I joined a few apps on it but have very little info on myself on it and only share that with my select family group created in settings. then icon/header pics for other group interests. the internet is not like your local small town coffee shop of buddies. more like hanging out in a dark coridor of a down town New York city subway at midnite. think about that next time you want to share yourself online.
