Topic: Completed my conversion to the E3DV6 - couple of questions

I took the plunge today since I am off this week and made the leap to the E3DV6.  All seems to have gone well.  I have been working on calibrating the printer and think I have it reasonably dialed in.  I am curious as to the settings people use for the following:

I went from a retraction rate of 2.00 mm on the stock to 1.00 mm on the E3DV6 per the recommendations of their WIKI.  Temps are roughly the same (with the same filament) and seem to work ok for me.  I am using the default table (5).

I have not added a layer cooling fan but have printed out this:

I bought this fan for it but have not hooked it up yet:

  • The connector on the fan is for a standard 3 prong lead for a PC fan slot.  The connector on the Davinci's extruder board is 2 prong and a different connecter.  Any thoughts on getting this to work?

  • I assume I only need the red and black leads on the fan correct (no need for yellow?)?

  • Hooking it up to the board with the red and black leads would allow me to control it still, correct?

  • Any other fan recommendations that are 5v?

I may also make an adapter for the DaVinci fan as well.

Thanks for your assistance.

Yellow wire is for RPM feedback which is meant for regular PC motherboards.  You'll only need the red and black.

Re: Completed my conversion to the E3DV6 - couple of questions

  • I would run the black/red to a constant 12v source instead of the da vinci PCB and have a switch inline

  • Correct

  • No. Using only the red/black will cause the fan to run at full speed while on

Re: Completed my conversion to the E3DV6 - couple of questions

Thanks for the information.  It appears the DaVinci 5V fan has only 2 leads and I believe it ramps up as needed.  Maybe I am wrong on this.  I was looking to repurpose the connector on the board to run the layer cooling fan.  Anyone know the connector type the Davinci uses for their fan?  I was thinking of ordering one and using that.  A link would be appreciated.

For those that run the DaVinci with the e3dv6 how do you print PLA or other non ABS filament?  Do you use a layer cooling fan and if so how is your set-up configured? Any particular fan adapter people like that won't get in the way?  Is a layer cooling fan a requirement for PLA?

A few pictures would be great. smile

I have the 12v E3D extruder fan wired into the main board. There is a 12v connection at the left side.
It runs all the time, no biggie for me. Also Ive spliced a charcoal canister fan for fumes.
The layer cooling fan uses the original 5V wiring DAV extruder fan.
Controlled by Repetier.

Printed PLA w/ fan, no probs and the other day Taulman BluPrint- no fan.
