Topic: Da Vinci 1.0 Pro

i have pre-ordered this printer mostly because of the open filament options. i SWORE i would never buy a da vinci again because of the  ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE customer support experience i have had. But i couldnt resist the price and options it had. i have been running the original da vinci 1.0 unhacked for a year now as my first ever 3d printer and it has been a great learning experience. i even bought a 3040t CNC router to couple with the intent of using it to smooth out prints, support and raft removal, and eventually to restore the intended accuracy of the design that is lost in the shrinking of material during printing. Once i find a suitable cnc programming software i will report more on this process.......my real question is, has anyone else pre-ordered this machine???? what is the general thought of the aluminum bed and possible laser etching???

Re: Da Vinci 1.0 Pro

I also have pre-ordered the Pro.  I currently have the 1.0A with repetier and an octoprint front end and I love it.  I ordered the Pro because of the open filament options, the aluminum bed and the laser add on.  I figured that with the aluminum bed I wouldn't have to worry about it cracking like some have had with the glass bed.  It also looks like it uses a bowden extruder.  I know there are mixed feelings about it but to me it has to help having that weight off of the print head.  I also ordered the scanner.  For the price, I figured it was worth trying out.

XYZ have forgot to mention you need a Intel 4th gen cpu to run their scanner.

Also there are two intel version. R200 for large things and body scan cost of $99
and then there is the F200 for smaller things and does more when put on a laptop. Cost $99

I've got a Kinect V2 for the PC which is by far better then both.
If you have windows 8.1 and have 3D builder installed you can scan with the Kinect then send it to your XYZprinter.

In my opinion XYZ should of done a deal with E3d and fitted their V6.

Re: Da Vinci 1.0 Pro

I'm using my xbox 360 Kinect as a scanner and it does a good job for large objects but you can't get in close with it.  The XYZ scanner says it has a 3.93 - 27.55 inch operating range and a minimum scan volume of 5 x 5 x 5 cm which is much closer than I can get with my Kinect.  I would like to be able to scan some smaller items to replicate like radio knobs and such.  As far as shipping for the Pro, the web page says mid to late November.

I am getting ready to try a Kinect as well. I was going to try it with the zoom adapter you can get for it to make it work in smaller spaces... I am curious if that will bring it's scanning size down as well.

Re: Da Vinci 1.0 Pro

The xyz scanner seems a good price but it has it's limitations.
The scan resolution is only 1.5mm, not much good for small objects although probably fine for scanning peoples heads and bigger objects.
Plus, it requires Windows 8 and USB 3.
I've been tinkering with the trial version of David laser scanner using a cheap 2nd hand DLP projector and a basic webcam (structured light scanning) and the results are stunning.
The full version of the software is a bit pricey but if you want high resolution scanning (down to 0.06mm) it's probably the cheapest and best option available right now.
It also has the advantage of being compatible with any camera with direct show support (including Canon eos dslr) and either a line laser or DLP projector so you can start of with cheap kit and upgrade later.

This a good video showing 3D tracking with a Kinect V2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_yMPLSZSEs

Second hand V2 are about £20 in the UK but the PC adaptor is about £25 new.

Re: Da Vinci 1.0 Pro

My printer has shipped!  It is coming from California all the way over to Georgia.  Should be here later this week.  I'll report back after it is up and running.  I will do a few test prints and then it is going back in the box.  It is my Christmas present after all.

Re: Da Vinci 1.0 Pro

Per a phone conversation I had with them last week they said it was a early December ship date.....I'll have to check mine and see if it's shipped too..which would be a pleasant suprise!

Re: Da Vinci 1.0 Pro

I haven't received word from xyz but from FedEx that it had shipped.  I then went to xyz's website and looked up my order and it showed that it had shipped.  I don't know if they are going in the order that they were ordered or not but I did order mine on Oct 08, 2015.

Re: Da Vinci 1.0 Pro

Just a note for you guys talking about the bed.. You can't print directly to a metal bed.. You must use Kapton tape for heated beds or Painters Tape for a cool bed. Or glass on top of the metal.. So you will still have glass breaking issues if you use glass, it will be plain glass so easy to replace.

Also another note, while open source in regards to filament it IS NOT open source in regards to software and you must use XYZware pro or Simplify3d if it even supports this model.

Otherwise you will need to wait for a port of Repetier which will probably kill some features such as the engraver.

Honestly I have had a Da Vinci 1.0 and while you get what you pay for it needed a lot of mods to get it to be reliable. They love to over drive motors and that will cause premature wear and failure. To fix that it required a different motherboard. Then there is issues with plastic parts such as bearing mounts being made of poor plastic and breaking. For the price it is a good deal for the parts but you will need to give it some love and labor if you want to get any quality printing done.

Personally I am done with XYZ. I don't feel it is appropriate to expect a customer to send a 30 pound printer back to Taiwan for warranty work at the customers shipping cost. They need to offer a full line of parts which they do not and the third party market is not very compatible with these machines without mods.

These system specs could also be steep for some who have used junk laptops or tablets to run printers up until now.. Such as 4GB of RAM required.

Re: Da Vinci 1.0 Pro

I emailed Simplify3d last week and they are waiting for their unit to arrive to work on getting their software to work with the Pro.  So, maybe not out of the box but soon.

Re: Da Vinci 1.0 Pro

I just set mine up. Notable changes, I'll post an update after a few prints. For now just using the abs cartridge they sent with it but I have a spool of hatchback pla I'll use next. I've had the 1.0 for a year and I feel your pain. Particularly since it's still bone stock with no mods.

Re: Da Vinci 1.0 Pro

Mine arrived today.   This is my first 3D printer.  So far so good.  I did two of the demo prints, and they came out great.   I am printing the maker robot right now.   Unfortunately I used the excellent quality setting so my build time is 27 hours.  I check it this morning and i have to say, its almost perfectly smooth so i decided to let it run.   I'll post a picture when its done.

Few questions:

1.  Can i use third party software?  The software that came with it seems over simplified and lacking many features.
2.  How do i use non xyz filaments?  do i just load the aftermarket filaments into their cartridge?
3.  Is there a setting to keep the LED lights on all the time?

Thanks!  Super excited.

Re: Da Vinci 1.0 Pro

no to the 3rd party (except when simplify3d supports it)

i saw a video of them using a different clip that loads the spool and it hangs where the cartridge goes, most spools are too large to fit in their cartridge. at least the hatchbox PLA one i bought is. Also mine didnt come with such hanger so im going to have to call them, or just make one.

as for the light. no clue. i wish.....

Re: Da Vinci 1.0 Pro

Any chance one of you guys with a Pro could post a shot of the extruder ?
I'm curious to see if they've improved it at all over the old one.

Re: Da Vinci 1.0 Pro

I've unboxed mine at lunch today but have not had a chance to print with it.  I did remove the extruder and if parkerclan22 doesn't get a picture up I'll post one later.  The extruder, while unfortunately not an E3Dv6 clone, does look a lot better than the previous one.  For one, the fan is much closer without all of the gaps it had before.  It looks like there will be no need to print a shroud to help the airflow.  Also, it looks like there is an extra heat sink although not all the way up the shaft like an E3Dv6.  And, since this printer uses a Bowden tube, there is very little space between where the filament exits and the hot end begins.  Hopefully that will mean flexible filaments won't have any trouble.  I do have a spool of Nijaflex that I want to try.  Finally, the nozzle itself is a bit longer so that it extends more past the flat plate where the heating element is installed.  This may help keep excess heat off of the print when the nozzle stays in a small area.

Re: Da Vinci 1.0 Pro

Just wanted to say Hello, and looking forward using this board.
I just ordered mine on 11/14, and am glad to see other people have started to get their printers.  Mine still has no delivery status.  I can't wait to get it  It will be my first 3D printer.  I was going to get a Twoup kit and build it, but decided to look at xzy's site before ordering the Twoup.  I was surprised they had the Pro, and did away with the DRM, because that was the only reason I had decided not to purchase an xzy printer.  Once I saw the Pro with no DRM I placed my order.   I check their website today, and I did notice it now says the pre order is sold out.

With the exception of the built in fan shroud it looks to be the same. The big test would be to see how it looks behind the fan.. any takers?
