Re: Camera Focus
I don't think its causing a problem -- especially since your single laser scans are using the thicker laser.

OK, will try some more scans - I thought the single laser scan was with the thinner laser. Had difficulty with left and right so had to swap pins in software! I will try some scans tomorrow with each laser on same item to get a good comparison and post back results.
Hi Uriah,
Please see links below. The thinner laser appears to give a better quality scan - what do you think? to me there is a noticeable difference. Is there anything else I could try?
James
Left - thinner - laser https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/747 … 6-left.ply
Right - thicker - laser https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/747 … hicker.ply
Both lasers https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/747 … 7-both.ply
what file formats are those? not jpg
It's the native format that most 3D scanners save the point cloud in, the Stanford Polygon format.
Those are the actual scanned models point cloud.
You can open them in MeshLab
James,
PM me your Kickstarter ATLAS 3D backer number.
Hi Uriah, just confirming I have sent you my backer number.
James
Got it. Thanks.
Just assembled my kit from Filastruder.
I also have a larger (Thicker) line from the right laser.
That laser also seems to have an intermittent connection, but works most of the time.
I assemble the Atlas 3D
and I also got lasers with different thickness
It effect the scan result dramaticly
with normal laser

with thicker laser

I also have the same problem. One laser is a nice thin crisp line and the other is thicker and fuzzy. I ordered through Filastruder not Kickstarter. I have not done individual laser scans all my scans were done with both lasers. If it will help I will do scans for comparison.
Hi Pirvan,
Thanks for the link to the camera focus. It really made a difference in the clarity of the camera picture. I didn't get to try a high quality scan yet, I'm still trying to get the calibration back to perfect, I have a slight double shell problem right now.

OK I am doing the Camera Focus now. about how much do I need to turn it counterclockwise? anybody remember when they done it?
I do not know. I turned it both ways but do not remember which was the correct way.
the link about it says counter clockwise a few turns but it was for inside a bird house like 3" from birds and it also said not too far or it will fall out of threads. I have turned it a half turn so far
OK link is way off on turns. the camera lens only goes 2 turns counterclockwise to remove (no more threads) only 1 turn further in from factory to bottom. the point of perfect focal point for our scanners is 1/4 turn counterclockwise. anyplace else makes focus worse. I did tests at different turns and to tell you how fine tuning is, 1 turn CCW makes focal point about 2" from lens so I would say factory setting is 15"-18" from lens and is why its blurred. now I can read the lettering on the side of the tires on my 144th scale Dragster by Racing Champions that says Goodyear Eagle. HA! those letters are 1/64" tall about .5mm
OK link is way off on turns.
Some camera's seem to be different. Mine did needed almost a full turn to get it focused
Since my 8MP v2 camera isn't recognized (can only select 5MP from menu), I thought it was a good moment to try the 5MP v1.3 camera that I also had around.
8MP camera has a good focus as it is but the v1.3 5MP one needs adjusting, as stated above.
I tried to re-adjust the focus but the glue on my 5MP camera was so well applied that I destroyed it trying (due to me not giving it up on time).
Consider this post a warning that the newer ones are so well glued that they can't be adjusted anymore. I have another 5MP one that looks very well glued while a third one, 5MP NoIR, looks adjustable like the one in the birdhouse experiment.
Edit: nevermind, the v1.3 cameras were knockoffs... Found one bought from farnell and the packaging and camera PCB's are different.
