Topic: Davinci 1.0a and PLA (Clicking under Repetier)

After 6 months of use of my stock XYZ 1.0a (Using resetter to use all kinds of filament from Zen Toolworks and Hatchbox ABS and PLA) I decided to flash to Repetier.

Currently: .92 firmware and 1.56 Host.

All the current projects required ABS and loved the upgrade...much quieter overall.

But last week needed to use my PLA Glow in the Dark.

I tried all manner of settings (collecting from many sites) anywhere from 170-240c flow rates from 30mm/s to 80mm/s....no retraction....Slic3r...Cura...all no go.

The Extruder clicks and doesn't feed with any settings (The basic loading and unloading process works as usual 230c)

I don't have any of the gcode the XYZware generated to see what is going on differently.

Tried three manufactures of PLA (Hatchbox, Zen Toolworks, XYZ)

Any help would great (Carl68 ...did you go through any of this?)

Your 1.0A is not able to print using PLA unless you use XYZ's brand. There are mods like adding heatsinks to the heat break in the head that will work.

The issue is the head design. The temps that third party PLA prints at are about 30 degrees higher then what XYZ prints at. So what happens is that extra heat saturates the heat break and the heat creeps up the feed tube and cause the PLA in it to swell and create jams which is the clicking you here.

XYZ was tricky. They say the printer will print PLA, but that means ONLY their brand.

I understand...but on my stock 1.0a I would use my re-setter (XYZPro) , set to 190c/40c Head/Bed on a empty cartridge and print with third party PLA with XYZware..with zero problems.

I guess I am trying to find out why that can't be recreated with repetier (Slicer/Cura) settings.

Those by default have a Z offset, have checked to make sure that offset is not putting the nozzle in contact with the bed? You might try playing with the Z offset in the start gcode and see if that helps.

Sorry I was not understanding your problem at first, and I never used Rep Host with the stock board. When I had the stock board I was using simplify3d. I then swapped out the mainboard for a RAMPS 1.4 and then used Rep host sometimes. I had issue with the stock board and Rep host feeding too little and making all my prints weak, dry and flaky looking.

Take a look at what scobo did to his extruder to prevent the clicking. \/

I am curious about the same thing. For me, I am using the same setup and I am able to print with glow in the dark PLA with the temp of 170 and bed temp of 40. I didn't have any problems. Today anytime I use a darker filament, the extruder clicks. I tried using a blue PLA with the same settings and it prints a little and then I get the clicking. Loading the filament and extruding 100mm works without problems, but when using Repetier with Slic3r I get the clicking.

Any advice? Is there anything different that needs to be done when using a darker filament?

Every roll of filament and I mean every roll, even of the same color will need a different temp setting and maybe even retraction and speed settings adjusted. This is just the nature of the business. I find darker colors seem to use higher temps while lighter colors need lower. I think it has to do with the coloring agent. When Possible I prefer to use natural as it prints very easy.

I used Bumat silver PLA the other day. From what I understand silver is not an easy filament to print.
Loaded the filament no problem. Let it squirt ok.
Started print-click, click.
Pulled the filament out-bulged. Reloaded ok. Printed click click.
Forgot the canola filament oilier. Printed fine after that.

The problem is cooling of the extrude barrel is not sufficient, barrel is not coupled properly thermally to heat sink, the heat sink and alu block have air gaps incensing heat resistance.
Also xyz filaments are thinner in diameter than other brands.
I have modified the flow using printed ducts, reassembled the head using heat compound paste and increased the voltage on the cooling fan.
So far i prints consistent without clicking and or jamming...

I should point out that although this mod worked for a while, it was far from reliable.
After many hours of fighting with the stock hotend to get it to print pla well for any length of time, I gave up and switched to an E3D.
My only regret is not switching sooner, I could have saved a lot of time and hassle.
The E3D prints pretty much anything you chuck at it, including flexi filaments once you elminate any gaps above and below the extruder gear.

I had also many "Extruder Clicks" with my da Vinci Jr. The problem is the Fan and the filament feedrate. Every time I've tried to use a fan with low noise (4500 rpm fan instead of 10000 rpm fan) then the extruder clicked and the nozzle was jammed.

I've solved it with a 12V 6000 rpm fan @ 19V. No clicks ... no problems.
