Topic: New to this. Bug with drivers for XP?

So I'm brand new to the 3D printing thing, and I got a da Vinci 1.0 (A, Aio? How do I tell?). It worked initially, although getting the drivers to install properly was a bit of a PITA.

Then, after startup, it asked to update the software (to version 1.0.37.1, I think) and now it can't find the printer at all. I get "Device not found" in the XYZware, and in the 'About' button.

Any clue how to roll it back? I tried just uninstalling and re-installing the software, but I don't think it actually uninstalls the drivers when it does.

Is there a better (more reliable) way to connect the da Vinci in Windows XP than USB? Is there a direct printer type (COM) cable that works for older software like XP? I don't mind shelling out a few buck for a cable if it will make the hardware more reliable.

Thanks in advance.

Is the printer listed correctly in the Windows device manager ?

No. It's listed as unknown USB device (and that was when it was printing).

I can screenshot the current hardware list if it would help.

Re: New to this. Bug with drivers for XP?

I had a similar problem with XP.
I fixed it by clicking 'update driver' then selecting 'browse my computer' and finally 'pick from a list of drivers'.
There were 2 drivers in the list, I tried them both till I found the correct one.
Hope this helps.

Re: New to this. Bug with drivers for XP?

So far I've tried two that didn't work. That's one reason I was trying to figure out exactly what printer I had. I can't find anything in the documentation that came with it. The sticker with the serial number just says da Vinci 1.0. That driver seems to think it's a COM driver (which, if I remember correctly, is different from a USB driver).

I'll get a screenshot when I get a chance. It's weird, though, half the time I look in the driver list, none of the XYZ drivers show up, and then the next time I look, they're all there again.

...I hate windows. Maybe there's a good Linux based driver and utility I can use on my linux box. big_smile

Re: New to this. Bug with drivers for XP?

My issue was with the arduino drivers (I flashed repetier) but I hoped it might be a similar issue to yours.
Hopefully, someone else will be able to offer a solution as I no longer use any xyz software/firmware.

Ok, thanks. I might try some third party solution if I can't get it to consistently work.

Bloody hell. Still can't get Win XP to find the printer.

I tried XYZ's tech support number, and got something in Chinese and then it hung up.

Anyone know if they actually provide support anywhere?

Re: New to this. Bug with drivers for XP?

I know it's perhaps a slightly extreme solution but have you considered flashing repetier ?
A lot of people on here are now using repetier firmware, many switched after just a few days.
There's many benefits to flashing, better quality prints and ability to use 3rd party filament to name two. And it should certainly solve the issue you're having.

Re: New to this. Bug with drivers for XP?

I'm going to look into it. A couple of days ago, I had never even heard of repetier. I'm looking for a good source for getting it to work on XP. We have a couple of Win7 machines here at the house too, and that may just be a better option.

Re: New to this. Bug with drivers for XP?

I have XP and Win 7 laptops, both work fine with Repetier.
The printer just shows up as an Arduino board once flashed.

The port is actually a USB to serial port converter so it may show up as serial device comport or it may show up as an Arduinio on com X or may show up as Adruino Due on com X. All should be valid. It will not show up as a printer unless you are running windows 10 and it will always show up in your ports under device manager and should be nowhere else.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

I'm running win XP, so it doesn't even know what an Arduino is. About the only reason I got this particular printer is because the documentation claimed that it worked with XP. So far, no luck.

Re: New to this. Bug with drivers for XP?

I have owned the da vinci 1.0A for a week. Had it hooked up to a windows 7 laptop. Worked fabulously after a bit of manual calibration. Hooked it up yesterday to an old laptop with XP so i can print remotely to it and printer wouldn't recognise the driver. Uninstalled and reinstalled XYZware a number of times, didn't help. Googled, came across your post, to see that I'm not the only one.
I have managed to get it working, so I thought I would register and respond as it may help you also.

The driver that comes with the software from the website has the wrong Device ID for the Da Vinci 1.0A.

The ID for the printer is ......2501..... The driver has it listed as ......2525. You can see in my images in the red box.
The first instance in the driver list, it's correct. The other 3 instances it isn't.

Open the driver .inf file and change the 2525 at the end of the lines showing da vinci 1.0A to 2501.
Go back to your device manager and update the driver and say yes to the unsigned driver install and it works.

See my images if they upload. I hope it makes sense

Folder containing the driver shown in red square is here C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRVSTORE

The correct Device ID appears in the first device list highlighted in blue
