Topic: Glass chipping and cracking

Just had to open a ticket with XYZ. I'm not holding up any hopes. However I printed a belt guard last night. The print finished and the printer went into cool down mode. I was sat at my PC and I could hear a clicking / cracking noise. Eventually the build platform dropped and said cooled. The part lifted off no issues. It was hardly stuck to the glass, However a piece of glass remained stuck to the part sad now I have a hole in the centre of the bed

Anyone else had this issue? This bed has only lasted 2 weeks 1 day sad

Nope. But I did void, what they laughingly call, the warranty about an hour after the box was opened.

Re: Glass chipping and cracking

What did you do to void the warranty? I'm keeping mine stock till it runs out

Re: Glass chipping and cracking

mine did this  about a week ago so I got 3 months (lots of prints though repetier says 27 almost 28 days of printing time)

However the heater works so I just put a sheet of borosilicate glass in.

You know that warranty will mean shipping the machine to them in Tiawan at your cost should you ever need to make a claim. This is why you see so many laughing about the warranty. They rarely ship parts and instead expect you to ship the entire machine so they can do the work.

So there really is no reason to save the warranty. Just tear into the machine and mod your heart out. You will honestly thank yourself once all the XYZ devils have been removed.

As for the glass just putting a piece of glass over the existing glass as long as the heater still works will not void your warranty.

Can you use something other than glass? Aluminum or steel for instance.

You can use aluminum as long as it's perfectly flat and you cover it with Kaptop, PET, for painter's tape. It's probably cheaper to get a piece of window glass than it would be to get a piece of aluminum, since it would have to be substantially thick to prevent warping.

Here's an 8x8 sheet of aluminum from Mcmastercarr that would be thick enough to print on for $15: http://www.mcmaster.com/#89015k239/=z2c6n6

Re: Glass chipping and cracking

I had this issue a few months after I had my printer as well.  They did replace it for me and sent a new heated bed.  I had actually purchased a bed from someone on the forums here that works well and has stronger glass (Borosilicate glass Heated Bed).  The user name on the forums here is jdholbrook33.

His website is:  http://www.davincizone.com/index.php?op … Itemid=239

Like I said I was able to get a replacement part from XYZ but had to send back my broken part.  It took like 2-4 weeks to get it but I did.  I was very persistent.  So now I have a back up although it looks like jdholbrook33 replacement should last.

I just happen to have a bit of 2.5mm think 200x200 aluminum. It isn't 3mm but I will give it a try and see how it works

Should be close enough! Hope it works for you.

Re: Glass chipping and cracking

I doubt the 1/8" thick aluminum is flat enough to make a good print bed surface.  Aluminum is soft and warps easily.

Re: Glass chipping and cracking

I have used  a 0.125" BARE ALUMINUM SHEET 7075-T6, 8.13 inches x 8.13 inches with good success.  I ordered it from online metals for a little more than the McMaster Carr price but the -T6 heat treating is a must to avoid warping.  I believe the 7075 is better suited for this application but the 6061 is OK as well. I don't use kapton tape with it but I do need to keep the glue built up or the parts will come loose during printing.  I have a heater directly attached to the aluminum so no glass at all in my setup.

Re: Glass chipping and cracking

I had to use my warranty once on my Duo and they sent me a replacement new upgraded extruder and shipped FedEx. But getting them to do that was like pulling teeth from a rabid dog!

Re: Glass chipping and cracking

I tried the aluminum and it didn't really work. It just wasn't level.  I got a 200x213mm Borosilicate glass build plate for £12. I just undid the auto calibration screw things, inserted the glass and screwed it all down. Quick and easy. Now I have a 100% flat (ok 99% flat) removable glass bed.

The only 'problem' is that because it don't expand and contract as much as the window glass XYZ put in the printer it is a little harder to get the prints off the bed, but that's ok. If, or when, it chips I will just turn it over smile
