Re: xyz da vinci extruder clicking

my printer head isn't printing but i don't hear a clicking sound and the bed is level does anyone no whats wrong.
i have tried pushing the abs in but it doesn't work.
iv'e tried removing the abs and then pushing it back in.
if anyone has any ideas pleas tell me.

Re: xyz da vinci extruder clicking

I am using PLA, and got the clicking noise. But what I am puzzled by is that I think it might be related to the model. The first model I printed with PLA, it never clicked and everything worked fine. The next model, I printed another day and I got the clicking noise when it first started and happened for the first couple of layers, then it printed the model fine. I printed the same model another day and the same exact thing happened. For both models, I used slic3r to generate the gcode and then imported into XYZ ware. I am going to print another model tonight and see if I get the clicking noise on a different model.

If you are getting clicking on the first layers but not others then your bed is too close to the nozzle. The back pressure is pushing back against the extruder and causing it to slip.

Re: xyz da vinci extruder clicking

My problem was cured with Robgrea's solution to put a fan on the Extruder motor.  There are many possible causes of this problem, so you do need to start with a perfectly calibrated bed to rule out those issues but if ABS prints fine, this may well be the answer to some folks problems since PLA has a lower melting temperature.

On my printer, ABS prints perfectly.  The bed is calibrated and produces excellent quality prints, but when I started trying to print PLA, I could be 4 hours into a print and the extruder would stop feeding.

After watching a print for several hours, I noticed the clicking start.  A little at first and then increasing till finally the print failed.

I have Repetier Host software and Adruino firmware installed in my XYZprinter 1.0 and I tried various heat settings and speed combinations, but could not control the missteps of the extruder until I put a fan on it.

I adjusted the extruder temperature to 225 degrees to compensate for the fan blowing on the extruder and now my PLA prints work great!  I am printing at .3mm layer height with the same settings that my ABS uses.

Touch any of the steppers and you will find they are very hot.  With the fan blowing on the extruder stepper, I can now touch the stepper without burning my finger.

I don't think I would have figured this out on my own, so I want to personally thank Robgrea for posting his solution.

My previous experience with CNC machines has shown that stepper motors do run very warm to hot, but given that XYZ put a caution label on the extruder stepper indicates to me that they purposely set the current to be high enough to feed filament properly and that may be why they did not have it setup for PLA in the first place.

Re: xyz da vinci extruder clicking

Like many of you, I had the same clicking noise. After a while I understood that it was because the printerhead was to close to the glass plate.
Now I use this noise to calibrate my DaVinci. It works perfectly in a few minutes.
Just start a print, and when it makes a clicking noise, adjust the screws (the one's you use to calibrate, and the one that is the closesed to the printerhead). If it clicks than lower the printing bed until the noise stops. If it doesn't make noise, higher the bed until it makes noise and than lower it a bit until the noise stops.

The perfect way to do this is to print a big raft which covers the whole print plate, so you have time to adjust all the screws, but be carefull to put your fingers in a working machine :-)

Are just use the manual adjustment process that has been a sticky in this section for a long time and not have the issue from the beginning. The instructions the machine comes with are wrong. The machine DOES have to be calibrated before first use.

Re: xyz da vinci extruder clicking

I find that the manual adjustment process discribed in this section is to complicated. The people who sold me the DaVinci told me that they never use the calibration function to calibrate. They just turn the calibration screws while the machine is running. I one's had a glass plate that was completely broken and some parts where about 1mm higher than others but I could still make prints adjusting the screws.
This way I found out that the machine doesn't have to be calibrated before you use it. You just calibrate it when it starts. And then it is calibrated for the next times you use it.

Re: xyz da vinci extruder clicking

So I'm new to the forums been having a problem with the clicking bed is level I have the 2.0a so I have two extruder number 1 won't print just clicks number 2 prints fine after some looking into it have found the filament drive gear on number one is loose and won't drive the filament it's held in by a c clamp so not really sure how you would tighten it up may try putting a thin washer between the gear and c clamp if anyone has had the same problem please let me know.

Can one of you post a image of the fan you are using and how you have it mounted?
Thanks

after try a lot (printer configuration, temps, bed calibration)  in order to solve my extruder clicking problem in my davinci 1.0 with repetier,  the soultion was to install a fan in the extruder motor, i hooked it to the heater cartridge wires...

when the extruder begins to heat the fan starts blowing

Re: xyz da vinci extruder clicking

I have been experiencing all kinds of clunking.... missing layers... a ball of filament.
After reading several posts and trying different things I think I solved my problem.
First of all the clunking from the head is from filament not being extruded. I tried all the bed leveling and the head to close to the surface and sometimes it would work. But then I experienced the clunking after several layers.... being to close to the bed was not the problem.
I removed and cleaned the head and it seemed to work but then it would come back with a print with missing layers. (I wasn't present to hear the clunking.)
After changing a cartridge I noticed I couldn't unload the filament... the head wouldn't come up to temperature. After reading posts on hear and doing ohms check on the head through the connector I had intermittent continuity which changed as I flexed the connector.
A-HA.... my problems seem to be an intermittent head temperature. It would cool down and clog the head.... then heat up again and start to flow.
Anyway... that's my theory and story.
As I write this I am having the issue of it saying it's not a valid filament cartridge.... I just bought it from them and unwrapped it.

Re: xyz da vinci extruder clicking

PS... I removed the connectors going to the head and used a mini terminal block and screwed the wires together.... so far things are working ok.

Re: xyz da vinci extruder clicking

OK. After having this issue for months I finally solved it.

First things first, the clicking is the stepper motor "over torqueing" and stalling. Essentially missing a step and clicking backwards. This is caused by the filament not feeding through the nozzle fast enough or blocking in the nozzle and pushing back against the extruder.

Reasons for filament not feeding:

  • Blocked nozzle

  • Trying to feed too fast (e.g. 0.3 + 100mm/s is too fast for Davinci!)

  • Nozzle too close to surface (either the glass or the last layer)

So what's the solution?

  • Un-block the nozzle

  • Don't print so quickly

  • Bed levelling + not so close for first layer

Having a bit of clicking on the first layer is OK, after all it is working hard pressing the first layer into the glass for adhesion. But after that there should be no clicking.

Thing is... I wanted to print fast! e.g. 100mm/s @ 0.3mm thickness. Bottom line is that in standard form the Davinci simply will not do it, it just clicks like mad and under-extrudes. After a lot more investigation I realised that really fast printers (e.g. ultimaker 2 or Delta printers) use a Bowden feed d to locate the extruder away from the hot end and reduce the weight of the head, such that it can move around faster without over-shooting. As soon as I did this I could watch the extruder motor "Clicking" basically stalling and going backwards until the tension was reduced.

When you look at many other printers they have a geared extruder, this is to increase the torque, often by x10 so that the motor can handle the pressure without "stalling." I didn't want to do this (for may reasons, including a reluctance to have the extruder on the outside of the davinci and not wanting a long filament run to reduce oozing) so instead I got a bigger extruder motor.

The standard motor supplies about 0.3Nm of torque. I went through 3 different motors ending up printing an adapter to use a 5Nm Nema 23 motor. It's a *huge* motor and complete overkill I suspect, but I get no clicking and I can print at maximum speed (yay!)

Re: xyz da vinci extruder clicking

I flashed with rep and was having the click issue wit no filament come through so i calibrated and saved to eprom then lowered the bed at the start of prints until it started coming out. Had to start and stop a few times to get it right but alls good now. So try a calibration then turn the screws anti clockwise about a quater

You saved my frustration trying to print an E3D V6 carriage for my 1.0 +1 to you. I added the fan with soem zip ties to the original carriage above the extruder stepper. so far I resumed my print and  have not had the overheating of the stepper problem. was drivign me mad. I know this thread is over a year old, but it helped me. So thank you!
