Topic: Da Vinci model questions before i buy

Hi Guys.
about to buy my 1st 3d printer for home use/fun.
i've decided on the da vinci for price and looks.
a few questions on which is which to make sure i get the right one.

having read lots and lots about them i 'think' the AIO does not look worth getting if the scanner is really as bad as its made out to be. so the Duo with 2 colors looks the best option.

there appear to be a few different models of the duo .. one in grey and another in blue and thats before i look at different model numbers as well. xyz firmware page shows a newer firmware for the blue so is the blue one the newer model and the one to buy ?

3F20AXEU00D   blue
3F20XXUS00H   grey

are these the only 2 models ? which is best/newer ?

I also see that now there filament cartridges are refilable so i guess its a good idea to buy the newest model instead of older stick to make sure i get carts that can be refilled to start with.  or do they come with non refils ones to start with ?
chip reseter or 3rd party firmware is the next thing .. will 3rd party go on the newest model and did they manage to include usage of the metal wipe tray box in the firmware ?

thanks guys .. hopefully i will know which to buy when i get home from work today and can order.

Re: Da Vinci model questions before i buy

My question to you is what are your plans....... Do you plan on modding the printer so you will be able to use cheaper filament or do you just want to stay stock? Right now from what I have read the newer blue printer has a new board and I think the current resetter doesn't work.

Da Vinci  AiO with firmware 1.1.1 using xyzscan 1.1.18
E3Dv6 hotend with custom carriage with Borosilicate glass bed
123D Design and Simplify3D, Replaced PS with a Solidgear Flex320
Zerokart resetter,  Installed a Extruder Controller for higher temps

i think i would be modding and would like to improve quality if possible with a netter firmware

Re: Da Vinci model questions before i buy

Word of advice, don't buy it. Save a little more money and get something better. I just got a Duo 2.0 and honestly the worst purchase in my life. Problems from day one, worst customer service on the planet. XYZ ware is HORRIBLE at best. You can print large objects but because of XYZ ware you can't. So your going to end up hacking it in maybe 3 months or so after warranty runs out. I got my Duo because it claimed to print PLA. Well guess what? Nope! I had to call tech support which is like calling the president. Then after days of finally getting through and yelling. They finally realized that mine did not come with the correct print head. So they sent me the correct one. Installed it and guess what? Still can't print PLA because the don't tell you that you have to have (2) PLA carts in the machine. You can't have (1) PLA and (1) ABS. They never told me that. So I gotta now get another PLA cart. Just so I can use some aftermarket PLA filament. Also there is a counter on the carts so each time you use it the number counts down to 0. Once it hits 0 you basically toss in trash no matter whats still in cart. Unless you buy a resetter to reset cart. But from my research the resetter only works on specific firmware versions which you have no idea when you order what your getting. They also tell you to not adjust the print bed because its done at factory. Well thats nonsense. It needs to be calibrated right out of box. Also doing that takes trial and error because the calibration software in printer is absolutely worthless. Just stupid things like that that will drive you up the wall. Also being limited to their filament. Although I have gotten 3rd party but guess what? While Im using 3rd party the carts that are in the system are counting down even though I'm not using any filament. Stupid stuff like this. When and if you call tech support for any issues if you don't have most recent firmware and XYZ ware then you void your warranty and they won't help you. So again unless you really really like to tinker and don't mind pure stupidity then stay away! After having my 2.0 since the beginning of July I am just getting to the point after much trial and error and pulling my hair out I can print on my whole bed full surface no prob. But still can't make big objects because of CheckSum errors that I have yet to find out what they come from. Just LOADS AND LOADS of issues. Please stay away from XYZ. No company should be allowed to sell products like this. Save up your money and get a Flashforge 3d or something or a Robo 3d. They all have their learning curve but XYZ is easiet the worse.

Re: Da Vinci model questions before i buy

I can't speak for the Duo but I've had a 1.0 for just over a year and love it !
I've made a very simple mod to the extruder which lets me print with many types of filament and after flashing Repetier and purchasing Simplify3d, print quality is excellent.
Regarding bed levelling, forget about the auto cal and just follow the guide on the first page of the forum and you can't go wrong.

Davinci 1.0 with repetier firmware & E3D V6 Lite
Anycubic Photon DLP printer, Einscan-S 3D scanner
Simplify3d, 123D Design, Meshmixer

I've got a duo 2.0A. Walk away from XYZ asap...their support is rubbish.

Re: Da Vinci model questions before i buy

The money you save doesn't out weigh the headaches you will get. Just save a few hundred more and get something better. This thing HAS to be modded and flashed and all kinds of stuff just to get it some what reliable. Its just not worth the couple hundred you save on a pure open source printer. Heck you can buy mine if you like. Its still under warranty. I finally got mine to print pretty nice. But would sell in a heart beat at a loss.

Re: Da Vinci model questions before i buy

my 1st 3d printer was the original da vinci 1.0, for home use/fun, in which i got it 1 1/2 years ago, now with almost 600 hours printed on it, and ive never had a problem. Ive been running firmware 1.1.G, with the xyz resetter from www.wctek.com. also newegg.com has had the da vinci 1.0 for as low as $300 brand new, so if check with their website weekly, its a great deal. For the price of $500 i still can't find a 3d printer for that price, that matches it, especially with the da vinci being in an enclosure, especially for abs, this is just my opinion.

Also i love my da vinci 1.0 so much, i really wanted an SLA printer, like the form 1+ but for $3000+, i opted on getting the xyzprinting nobel 1.0, and have had it about 3 weeks and love it.

Re: Da Vinci model questions before i buy

My aio has been working well.
I am happy with the printer I have only had it for about 3 months. and yes I have been tinkering with it a lot. swapped out to a e3d different carriage ....

However I wasn't sure if I would enjoy 3d printing to start with so I opted for this printer as it was pre built wasn't to expensive. so if I didn't like it then it wasn't a large investment that would not get used.

Knowing what I know now would I buy the printer again.
I  would have got the 2.0 duo instead of the AIO. sorry but the scanner on the AIO sucks rocks. as far as a printer goes it has been a fun printer.

but if I was budget constrained then yes I would.   For the money they are a good printer.

note however unless you mod them you will be stuck using the filament carts from xyz.

I have also been tempted to just build  a mendel max 3 for or to build my own design using the open rails system.  those options cost a bit more.

Will you get a better printer if you where to do that. possibly (I think it depends on your mechanical skills if your doing a kit)
Are there better printers out there. I think so

I think the http://printrbot.com/shop/assembled-printrbot-play/ is a good solid machine from the reviews I have read.
its in the same price point. as a  the  davinci jr

Note its pla only (well I suppose you could feed it what ever you want but it doesn't have a heated bed)

@mark.burton
What firmware and ver of xyz scan are you using? My scans are coming out pretty good I'm thinking it may because of my firmware ver and I'm using scan ver 1.1.18 I tried the upgraded ver and my scans started looking horrible.

Re: Da Vinci model questions before i buy

@Kex0175,

I am now running repetier so the scanner is completely non functional. I don't remember what firmware I was using when it was stock but I know I had to upgrade the firmware to what xyz had available before it would print.

@iceman. I can get a new duo 2.0 from new egg for 449 if I watch for it so that's more then I could buy a new one at.

at this time if I where to be getting another printer I would invest more. maybe build one using open v-slot and a e3d cyclops. or chimera as those would be a lot easier to set up.
