Topic: Printer stuttering during prints

Is there a way to stop my printer from making a stuttering motion?
I'm using Simplify3D and the prints are great but then they go through this stuttering/jittering motion which destroys it completely although the supports and infil work normally

Trying to post the video for reference.

Re: Printer stuttering during prints

Cant view mov files. You know that format is rather dated and exclusive to apple mostly. Android devices cant view them.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Lol sorry, recorded them on my iphone, haha.
I'll try to convert or host them.

What kind of video standard is best for most people?

Re: Printer stuttering during prints

Avi is the most common supported format for most devices.

Ok, reuploaded in .avi, cheers Carl

Re: Printer stuttering during prints

Viewed them, all I can say is weird. The pauses are my biggest concern. Is your machine stock? What softwares are you using? Seems to me like it is trying to print too fast and the motors are missing steps.

Re: Printer stuttering during prints

Agreed. The machine is a 1.0a that was running 1.0.6 when I got it. I flashed it to repetier 0.92. Ive had very little success with the repetier host but better success with S3D.

My print didnt even finish for some reason, posting pics below:

What speed are you trying to print at?

Re: Printer stuttering during prints

I also run repetier 0.92 on a 1.0 and have issues like that with certain shaxon filament. What type of filament, temp, and bed temp are you using? I dont think that is your issue though, and i never seen pausing during the print like those videos. I use curaengine mostly and attached my settings. What speeds are you printing at? http://soliforum.com/i/?8BAGLmW.jpg

Re: Printer stuttering during prints

S3D is at the default 1800
Host sits at 4800 i think, I rarley use host
Ive never used Cura before because I didnt understand the setup

Not sure on brand of filament though

Re: Printer stuttering during prints

Here is 2 other prints I did yesterday, they came out fine.
The 3 ring gyro barely needed any cleanup either.

Problem seems kinda intermittent.

Re: Printer stuttering during prints

Is it possible that is just a bad model? Especially seeing it did not finish. Maybe share the STL so others can try it and see. You could also try to run it through netfabb. Does the printer pause between moves on all models or just this one?

Re: Printer stuttering during prints

Is the machine protected from drafts/wind? I had solved a intermittent quality issue that was driving me crazy. Turned out to be my ac vent was pointing at my top vent all the way across the room and the draft every 15 minutes or so, when it kicks in were the culprit. Is the print environment the same the whole time?

Re: Printer stuttering during prints

This is the .stl link from thingiverse http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:666355

My environment isnt drafty that I know of and the printer is fully enclosed, including the little window sections.
I have had it happen on quite a few different models. Tried various temps etc. Tried the bed between 90-115 and extruder between 200-230. Tried with the fan on and off, mostly off since most people  say the fan is more for PLA and I'm only printing with ABS at the moment.

The printer was working fine, only reason I flashed was due to the filament cartridges being so expensive.

Re: Printer stuttering during prints

Carl caught a big issue. I got the object model is not manifold/watertight when i loaded it in curaengine. Try running it through netfab.

Re: Printer stuttering during prints

Hmm I see, never used netfabb before. Just going through, it says I've repaired the file but there are still errors with it.
Gives me another program to fiddle with though, lol. Am I best off to just do an analysis and repair of whatever I'm printing? Just to be sure?

Re: Printer stuttering during prints

I have a theory. Try cooling the board and motors with fans.

I used to have a problem with printing skulls and the like. Round objects that had only a few faces.
It would stall causing blobbing, or shift on an axis. When I added cooling, the problem didn't entirely go away, but it did delay the shift/pause from happening. But introducing cooling and modifying speeds, I'm able to print facial features.

This may not be your problem, but I hope this insight helps!

Re: Printer stuttering during prints

No worries, I've just fixed the file and will try that first to see if anything changes.

Any help and input is good and I'm more than willing to listen and learn. I appreciate everyone's help.
I'll post a pic of the print when its done and reassess the situation

Re: Printer stuttering during prints

I go through periods of running everything through netfabb that i didn't create, then i tend to get lazy on it.

I always run the stuff i create in sketchup. I am not that good with it and hard for me to make stuff water tight in there. The few stuff i made in openscad never had that issue, I think its just how it works.

Its another way to try and get a better  print out when in doubt.

Please post the picture when done. I'm curious on the end product because the way it sliced after fixing in netfab in both curaengine and slicr3, its a tough one. I could only get what looks like the supports good in slicr3.

Good luck

Re: Printer stuttering during prints

AZERATE beat me to it. That sounds exactly like the problems I was having with my S3D before I put an 80mm PC fan on the Sanguin pcb. Do you have any cooling on your stepper drivers / pcb?

Easy to try. Who knows, that could be all it is...?

Two SD3s - One with Sang, One with Printrboard, Fans on control boards!!! Do this!!!, Dual Glass Beds, Blacklight "EZ Bake Oven" - Improves Ambient Temp, Sketchup, Repetier, Slic3r. Graphic Designer & Makeshift Engineer. Drinks Lots and Lots and Lots of Rum.

Re: Printer stuttering during prints

Still same issues. I didnt bother to finish the print since they are messing up with in first few layers. Saves wasting filament.

I can imagine a fan helping if the boards were overheating or something like that, but from  a cold boot, I'd doubt it. Not hard to try though.
Do you have a pic of what I need to be doing with the fan and whereabouts i need to install?

Still a noob here

Just get a desk fan for the moment, remove the back panel of the unit and let the fan blow directly on the mainboard in the back.

Mid breeze would be fine or higher?

Damn 4 prints failed with fan

Then it is not a heating issue. On your board since you have the machine open, are the stepper drivers in sockets (look like four small circuit boards on top of main) or are they soldered directly (4 of the same IC's near the stepper connectors)?
