Re: Anyone try the new version of Slic3r?

Everytime I've upgraded in the past the ini and config is retained. I think they're stored elsewhere on the computer and unaffected.

Re: Anyone try the new version of Slic3r?

Hi... and sorry for maybe a silly question... but what is slic3r ?

Right now to do my prints I'm using "pronterface.py" + "skeinforge" (I access skeinforge from pronterface/settings/Slicing settings"). This is the software that was advised in the getting started stuff on solidoodle

Is slic3d some plugin you put into pronterface to replace skeinforge? Or does slic3d totally replace pronterface.py?

And does slic3r give better results than the stuff I'm using ("pronterface.py" + "skeinforge", which I'm pretty happy with)?

Thanks for info

PS: Printer is barely getting a rest since this WE. This thing is a miracle. I think I'm going to order the V3 just in case my V2 breaks down (for that matter what is the life time of this machine?), I'm making all sorts of tools, toys, accessories (using CATIA V5 for design)!

Re: Anyone try the new version of Slic3r?

Hi Harvey,

Pronterface is a host, it is used to talk to the printer. Skeinforge is a slicer which turns a 3D model into gcode and then gves it to the host so it can be sent to the printer.

Slic3r is a rival to Skeinforge and in some ways far superior. The host which runs it is Repetier-Host, which is vastly superior and still supports Skeinforge as a slicer.

I find RH and slic3r to be a slicker, faster and more powerful package, although that's not to say that that Pronterface and Skeinforge don't work.

See the early posts on Ian's blog for some great introductions to RH and Slic3r. Please note that some of the firmware things he mentions should not need attention since Solidoodle adopted my firmware several months ago.

Re: Anyone try the new version of Slic3r?

Thanks for these details.

So can I generate the gcode with slic3r (instead of skeinforge) and then load it just the same in pronterface, this would be in order to avoid installing (and configuring) a second host? I guess all the hard work is done by the slicer.

If I get it right, all the host does is feed the gcode into the printer. Because in all case I load the gcode into pronterface (no matter who generated this gcode I suppose).

Thanks

That is correct. Repetier-Host is pretty slick though, and has a great range of features that make it attractive. Make sure you check it out.

Re: Anyone try the new version of Slic3r?

Once you try out repetier and get everything dialed in, you'll have to force yourself to go back to pronterface. The layout and basically everything in general is much more user friendly.

Re: Anyone try the new version of Slic3r?

Yes I agree, give Repetier a try. I switched in December and haven't looked back.

In fact Solidoodle itself says to use Repetier instead.  I am have been trying to learn the software while waiting for my SD3 and Skeinforge is way, way slower.  On an object that I desired it took over 1 hour for Skeinforge to slice it, where as Slic3r v0.98 took a mere 2 minutes.  When I get my machine I will actually test which one actually does a better print.

Re: Anyone try the new version of Slic3r?

I was testing the software, since I don't have my printer yet and probably wont for quite a while still.  This is what I am seeing on the software side using Repetier and Slic3r 0.98.  The blobs are what concern me, will the actually print like that?

Re: Anyone try the new version of Slic3r?

lotw_1,
I don't see any blobs in that screenshot. If you want to circle them and/or attach the STL so I can view in my RH I can give you an answer.

Thread Note:
Repetier-Host Mac has also been updated from .51 to .52

Changelog:
Version 0.52
  Slic3r 0.9.8
  Remove comments for M/G Codes > 255.
Emergency kill now sends reset signal and M112.
  More baud rates.
  Select extruder from manual control.
Show multiple temperatures for Repetier-Firmware 0.80 or higher.
Switch ETA between time left and end time.
  Fixed possible dead lock.

I upgraded to the newest version of Repetier, actually told me about the new version before I saw your post.  Here is another screen shot with the areas highlighted.

Are you saying that the new Slic3r actually shows blobs that it plans to add to the printout?

Yes.

<sarcasm> Not a feature that I would have requested, but I am impressed! </sarcasm>

Re: Anyone try the new version of Slic3r?

lotw_1,

I see, I wonder if that is just a graphics bug or not.  Want to post up the STL and I will see what my slic3r shows? Did you have randomize perimeter starting points enabled when you sliced this?

That feature has been in Slic3r a while but I've never used it:

Print Settings > Output Options > Sequential Printing

Would love to hear how well it works.

Is there anything like this in skeinforge or a trick for it?

I am wondering that too, since I don't have my SD3 yet and probably won't for a while I cannot test.  I am attaching an STL file that is simple, but on my screen has some issues.  Screenshot will show the errors

Re: Anyone try the new version of Slic3r?

Ran into another problem with Slic3r.  Memory management.  Skeinforge and Curu will slice a high polygon count model, but Slic3r says out of memory and then crashes.

Re: Anyone try the new version of Slic3r?

lotw_1, looks like those are being generated by a setting in your slic3r.  Here is my gcode output so you can load it in RH and check it out.
