Topic: Extruder

Hello (Again sad )

My filament will go past the drive gear until I can't see it and then it stops.  I've tried cooling it all the way down where i can hold the extruder.  i unscrew both the screws and take off the cover.  the extruder hangs on the wires.  i try to center it all up and screw everything back together.  I heat it all back up and try to put filament through it again.  It stops like usual.  What have I done wrong (again)

What material are you using and what temperature is your extruder set for and what is it's actual temperature?

Re: Extruder

You have the extruder running when you do this correct? I dont think your extruder has a release you can press and then push the filament through. If the motor is not feeding while you are pushing then you will not be able to push it past the feed gear.

I can get it past the drive gear.  It's when it gets to the heating square it stops.  (The extruder is at 230). I've tried pushing and it won't go through.

Re: Extruder

Sounds like you have a clog then. Could be old filament that has hardened from being cooked over and over.. If you can get it apart try soaking it in acetone for a few days. If you have used PLA as well then the Acetone may not help since it will do nothing to PLA.

I am not a press user but have checked youtube yet? There are how to videos on virtually every other printer.

Should I soak it for a week?  Will I have to still scrub the filament off or will is dissolve?

Re: Extruder

A couple of days should do it, the ABS will dissolve and turn to mush so you will still need something small like wire to clean the nozzle form outside in. I have read guitar strings work well and the E string is about the right diameter. you just need to try and push the filament out from the feed nozzle in other wise the clog could stay inside and just move and you will have it come back later when you are running a 6 plus hour print. If the press does not have an insert in its feed tube and it is just straight metal to the tip you can use a small drill bit by hand only that is a bit smaller in diameter than the feed tube. Just rotate it gently by hand as you insert it and it should pick up the mushy ABS and pull it out. Just try not to use too much force as you near the nozzle interior as you don't want to damage it.

Re: Extruder

There is a way how you can check if it is clogged (any maybe unclogged it): Remove the 2 screws that hold the plastic cover on the extruder. This should reveal the nozzle on the extruder. Heat it to 250 Celsius. BE AWARE NOT TO TOUCH THE NOZZLE OR IT WILL FRY YOUR FINGERS !!!!!! Instead use something to grab it. Then push the filament by force to the nozzle. It should remove anything that is in there. If it extrude filament, then it is unclogged. It worked for me.

Again:
