Topic: what should I be printing with?

I have a 1.0A printing with 3rd party abs. What all materials can I print with this set up? I don't like how ABS is coming out. Is PLA any better? Can I try it?
  thanks

Re: what should I be printing with?

Your model is supposed to be able to use PLA, but only XYZ brand.  They have it specially formulated to melt at a much lower temp than third party PLA. You will need to do some mods if you want to use PLA but not XYZ brand. PLA performs better but is not as durable, can not be used outside, and will warp if used far parts in a vehicle.

The brand called Midland which is Microcenters house brand has done good for me. Frys house brand called Shaxon works well if you only use basic colors. Stay away from their neon colors. Unless you like taking your extruder apart and soaking it in Acetone over night. Also any of the higher end brands. With filament you will usually get what you pay for.

They have makerbot filament also. Is that better?

It is very good, but just like their printers it is nearly twice the cost that it should be.

Re: what should I be printing with?

HIPS is also a good one to print with it prints at the same temp as abs and doesn't smell as bad

Da Vinci  AiO with firmware 1.1.1 using xyzscan 1.1.18
E3Dv6 hotend with custom carriage with Borosilicate glass bed
123D Design and Simplify3D, Replaced PS with a Solidgear Flex320
Zerokart resetter,  Installed a Extruder Controller for higher temps

He has a stock machine. Are you sure HIPS wont give him problems?

If he can't change the temps I wouldn't try it

Re: what should I be printing with?

I can change the temp. I have a cartridge recounter. I'm looking for the strongest material I can print.

Re: what should I be printing with?

The strongest for you with a stock extruder regardless of temp is ABS.. PLA is not as durable, and HIPS is usually used as support material since it can be dissolved with a citric based solvent called Lemonol or something like that.

You can print pet-g.  Microcenter's  brand works just fine.

Re: what should I be printing with?

Of the 3 ABS brands i have tried: (XYZ/ Monoprice / Zen Toolworks)  (tested doing the Da Vinci demo vase)

Monoprice has been the toughest...even sanding has been a problem in some cases.
235c Head Temp worked the best for layer adhesion.

XYZ was the worse...so that is used for small stress free stuff.

PS: I hear great things about ColorFabb XT...but have not tried yet.
